Abstract: Polarized light is input to an optical modulator (16) typically consisting of an electrooptic crystal. The polarization state of the input light is changed in accordance with a voltage applied to the optical modulator (16). Receiving the light output from the optical modulator, a polarization interferometer (18) produces an interference fringe on the input surface of a photodetector (20) such as a streak camera or a CCD line sensor (134). Based on an output signal of the photodetector (20), an analyzing device (22) calculates the pitch and a movement distance of the interference fringe to determine the voltage applied to the optical modulator (16).

Abstract: Young's interferometer (18) consisting of a single slit (14) and a double slit member (16), and an analyzer (20) are arranged along the axis of light to be measured. Parallel slits of the double slit member are provided with respective polarizers (16A,16B) whose polarizing directions are at +/- 45 DEG to the longitudinal direction of the parallel slits. The polarizing direction of the analyzer (20) is set in parallel with the parallel slits. The incident light passes through Young's interferometer (18) and the analyzer (20) to form an interference fringe, which is detected by an image detector unit (22). An image analyzer unit (24) produces an intensity profile of the interference fringe and determines the polarization state of the incident light, for instance, by comparing the produced intensity profile with profiles stored in advance.

Abstract: A light beam from a source (14) is chopped by a chopper (16) and split by a beam splitter (24) into two beams. The intensity of a first beam is changed by using, e.g., an electrooptic material (12) in accordance with a change in a signal to be detected, such as a voltage in an electronic device. The intensity of the first beam is detected by a first photodetector (22). The second beam is detected by a second photodetector (26) without its intensity being changed to provide a reference signal. At least one of the outputs of the first (22) and second (26) photodetectors are adjusted so that they are equal when no signal is applied to the light intensity changing means (12). The difference of the thus adjusted output signals is detected a narrow band detecting means (28) such as a lock-in amplifier (42C) in a narrow band at the chopping frequency to provide an output having a greater sensitivity.
