    Abstract: An additive comprises an aqueous dispersion containing (i) an aqueous beeswax emulsion adjusted to be alkaline and (ii) at least one film former chosen from 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentane diol and esters thereof, butyl diglycol acetate, and methoxypropanol. If necessary, a pigment and an ammonium acrylate pigment dispersant may be incorporated. Typically, the additive contains 5-35 wt.% beeswax emulsion having a pH of 9-13. The beeswax emulsion may have a melting point of 50-90°C. In a preferred embodiment, the additive comprises 41-51 wt.% aqueous beeswax emulsion containing about 15 wt.% beeswax, 40-52 wt.% film former, 5-10 wt.% pigment, and 0.5-2 wt.% pigment dispersant. The use of the additive for improving early resistance to driving rain of physically hardening coating compounds based on aqueous acrylate dispersions adjusted to an alkaline pH is also disclosed. Typically, 5-20 wt.% of the additive is incorporated into the coating compound prior to application.
