    Abstract: Stationary patterns of magnetic domains in a film layer of magnetically hard material define local field gradients for movement control of single-wall domains located in a contiguous sheet of magnetic "bubble" material. Suitable patterns of uniformly magnetized regions are established in the hard-magnetic film to provide the control pattern. A second garnet film of suitable composition, for instance, may be grown epitaxially on the bubble medium to provide the hard magnetic control film. Bubble domain confinement and propagation patterns are established in the hard-magnetic film by conventional recording methods or the desired pattern can be generated by projection or scanning the pattern with a light beam or an electron beam, or by thermomagnetic transfer from a master pattern.

    Abstract: A magnetic read head assembly comprises two magnetostatically coupled magnetoresistive (MR) elements, and conducting means for supplying a drive current to the elements. The drive current serves as a sense current as well as a bias current. The drive current is provided to both elements concurrently, so that the current through each element serves to magnetically bias the other element. An output differential read signal is obtained from the two MR elements.

In a read out arrangement for a magnetic store comprising a transparent plate 12 of magneto optical material, such as a garnet, in which remanent magnetic states as shown by arrows 14 are established in discrete zones 13 to represent digital information, a plane polarized light beam 10 from a source 11 is converted by the zone through which it passes into an elliptically polarized beam 10a having a direction of polarization (shown at 16 and 17 in Figs. 1 and 2 respectively) determined by the direction of zone magnetization, the polarization direction, and hence the magnetic direction of the zone, being identified by a detector 20. The detector comprises a compensator 21 which converts elliptical polarization 16, 17 to circular polarization 26a, 26b, followed by a quarter wave plate 22 which converts circular polarization to plane polarization, the orientation of plane polarization 28a, 28b being determined by the direction of circular polarization 16, 17. One orientation of plane polarization is rejected by an analyser 24, so that a light beam is detected by a photo-electric cell 25 only when the magnetic state of the zone in the light path is in a particular one of its two possible directions. The compensator 21 may selectively absorb a plane polarized component of the elliptically polarized light or may be a Babinet or solid compensator.

    Abstract: A magnetoresistive (MR) read transducer comprising an MR layer (11) having passive end regions (14) separated by a central active region (12). A longitudinal bias is produced by a thin film (16) of hard magnetic material in the end regions only, and the thin film of hard magnetic material is spaced from the MR layer by a nonmagnetic spacer layer (18) so that a magnetostatic longitudinal bias is produced of a level to maintain the passive end regions of the MR layer in a stable state.

    Abstract: CURRENT ACCESS BUBBLE MEMORY SYSTEM A current access bubble memory system includes a method and device for propagating and switching isolated bubbles within a plurality of orthogonal propagation channels. The device includes two orthogonal arrays of parallel current conductors oriented at 45.degree. angles to the two orthogonal bubble translation axes. The conductors in each array are regularly spaced a distance S apart from center to center. The first array of conductors are connected in parallel to a first current source and the second array of conductors are connected in parallel to a second current source. The propagation channels are defined by confining means to have a width d where d is the bubble diameter. The centerline of the channels are spaced a distance of about S/8 from the center of adjacent conductor intersections. Bubble translation occurs through sequential activation of the two bipolar current sources. Use of specific activation sequences allow selective control of the bubble propagation path at channel intersections. The method provides for flexible design of memory configurations with all accessing and switching functions controtlable by means of specific activation sequences of the two current sources.
