Abstract: In a TDMA cellular network, there is provided a mechanism for shared-carrier frequency-hopping. It comprises: allocating on a frame basis within a reuse diameter to one coverage area during certain timeslot(s) at least one from a pool of TDM-frame-hopped carriers and allocating on a frame basis within that carrier reuse diameter to another coverage area during certain other, substantially non-overlapping timeslot(s) that frame-hopped carrier, all in substantially non-interfering time-synchronism with any proximal reuse of that carrier, whereby the advantages of frequency hopping are obtained. Stated differently, it comprises: at one instant in time, allocating within a reuse diameter to one coverage area at least one of a plurality of hopped carriers and at that same instant in time, allocating within that carrier reuse diameter to another coverage area another of that plurality of hopped carriers, all in time-synchronism with any proximal reuse of that carrier. The control and access carriers may also be included in the hopping pool, causing certain timeslots to be hopped on a sequence different from the others. The pool of hopped carriers is further apportioned among co-located sites into hopping groups, thereby reducing intra-system synchronization requirements. To solve the near/far problem, TDM timeslots bordering hopping boundaries are preferentially allocated to less distant mobile users.

Abstract: FDM INBOUND/TDM OUTBOUND COMMUNICATION SYSTEM of the Invention An apparatus is provided for arranging an RF trunked communication system into a multiplicity of individual RF trunked communication subsystems. Within each subsystem, the subscriber units utilize Frequency Division Multiplexing (FDM) to communicate with the fixed equipment (inbound). Also, within certain subsystems, the fixed equipment utilizes Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) to communicate with the subscriber units (outbound). One advantage of this arrangement is that the subsystems may be further arranged to share one or more inbound FDM channels and one or more outbound TDM time slots as a duplex (inbound and outbound) control channel.

Abstract: REMOTE CONTROL SYSTEM HAVING SYMMETRICAL TONE, SEND/RECEIVE SIGNALLING CIRCUITS FOR RADIO COMMUNICATIONS The remote control system having symmetrical signalling circuits for radio communications is coupled to a single wire line/audio channel 26 and permits two or more units, base stations 12 and/or remote consoles 14, to be coupled to the single wire line. Each signalling circuit comprises a wire line coupler 48 for coupling to the wire line 26, an audio input 46 line and an audio output 44 line. An automatic gain control circuit 56 is coupled between the wire coupler 48 and the audio output 44 line and a filter 104 and line driver 106 are coupled between the audio input 46 line and the wire coupler 48. A control unit 70 including a microprocessor 71, a tone encoder 214, a tone decoder 210, a timer, a clock, and a memory 212 is coupled by output lines to the automatic gain control circuit 56 for controlling the modes of operation thereof which include a slow decay mode, a fast decay mode, an adapt mode and a hold gain mode. The output from the gain control circuit 56 is also routed through a bandpass filter 64 and a limiter 67 to the control unit 70. Further, the tone encoder 214 of the control unit 70 is coupled to a summing circuit 102 situated between the filter 104 and line driver 106 through a filter 97 and level control circuit 100. The protocol programmed in the microprocessor enables any unit to take control of the audio channel 26 by initiating the sending of a message. Also mute gates 60,80 are provided for disabling audio output or audio input while a message is being sent or received over the audio channel 26.

Abstract: Audio degradation is minimized in scenarios where tandem coding occurs. One such scenario is in the environment of voice mail service. Characteristics of an audio information signal are determined, and the signal is classified as to whether further coding should be performed and, if so, which rate/type of coding should be performed. Characteristics of the audio signal which are determined are, inter alia, quality characteristics, rate of previous coding, type of previous coding and the source of previous coding of the audio information signal. The source of previous coding determined may further include, inter alia, an analog network, a digital network, a PSTN or a wireless communication system. Based on this information, the voice mail service will either choose not to further code the audio information signal or code the audio information signal with the best coding algorithm available.

Abstract: A code division multiple access (CDMA) communication system reduces interference by reducing the encoding rate for selected mobiles. The system primarily uses link related characteristics such as, inter alia, distance measurements, physical resource power and mobile determined noise, to determine which mobiles require a encoding rate reduction. Once determined, the encoding rate of the determined mobiles is reduced, which in turn reduces self-interference and enhances system capacity.

Then, communications are substantially simultaneously transfered to the second communication entity while terminated from the first communication entity.
