    Abstract: A cosmetic compsn. for the first stage of permanent waving of keratinous matter, esp. hair, involving reducing the disulphide bonds of the keratin, contains (a) an agent for reducing the di-sulphide keratin bonds, (b) ornithine, lysine or arginine as alkalising agent, and (c) a cationic polymer contg. prim., sec. or tert. amine gps. or quat. ammonium gps. in the main chain. Pref. the cpds. are sulphites, bisulphites and/or thiols (pref.), esp. cysteine or derivs., cysteamine or derivs., or 3-mercapto- propionic, thiolactic or thioglycolic acid or their ester or salts, opt. associated with a disulphide, and used in amt. of 1-20 (5-15)wt.% of the compsn.; (b) Arginine is pref. opt. with other alkalising agent, e.g. NH4OH, monoethanolamine or a carbonate, esp. to neutralise the acid reducing agents, in amt. of 0.1-18% of the reducing compsn.; (c) The polymer (i) contains piperazinyl units and (hydroxy)- alkylene units, opt. broken by O, S, N or aromatic or heterocyclic rings, and opt. the oxidn. or quaternisation derivs., (ii) is a water-sol. polyaminoamide, opt. cross-linked and/or alkylated, (iii) is a deriv. of a polyaminoamide obtd. by condensn. of polyalkylene polyamines and polycarboxylic acids, followed by alkylation with bifunctional agents.

    Abstract: A process for evaluating the ionic state of the surface of keratin fibers, especially human hair, which comprises taking at least one sample of fibers from the fibers to be evaluated, contacting the sample with an acidic solution of at least one acidic or basic dyestuff, assessing what, if any, change in the color of the solution has taken place and attributing the ionic state to the surface of the fibers accordingly.
