Abstract:
The present invention provides a polymeric, particularly aramid, fibrous nonwoven web having a relatively small pore size. The present inventive fibrous nonwoven web preferably has a high titer reduction with respect to bacteria such as Pseudomonas diminuta and viruses as exemplified by PR772 coliphage. The present invention further provides a method of filtering a fluid by passing a fluid through the present inventive fibrous nonwoven web, as well as a filter element incorporating the present inventive fibrous nonwoven web. The web may be coated to render it hydrophobic and oleophobic, and thus repellent to liquid chemicals. Such chemically repellent webs may be adapted for human apparel, and fashioned into garments suitable for use in adverse environments such as biological and toxic environments.
Abstract:
A porous medium and a filtration/purification assembly as well as a method of making and using them are provided. In one embodiment, the filtration/purification assembly includes a housing having a fluid inlet and a fluid outlet, a fluid permeable filter medium disposed within the housing between the fluid inlet and the fluid outlet across a fluid flow path provided between the fluid inlet and the fluid outlet, and at least one barrier member capable of allowing fluid flow through the barrier member and located in at least one of the fluid inlet and the fluid outlet. The fluid permeable filter medium and/or the barrier member may comprise a reactive medium. In another embodiment, a method for making a porous medium comprises forming an oxide layer on substantially all exposed surfaces of a porous metal substrate, depositing at least one layer of carbon on substantially all of the oxidized porous metal substrate, depositing a precursor metal species on the carbon layer, and heating the porous metal substrate containing the carbon layer to form active sites on the carbon layer, wherein the active sites include at least partially deoxygenated metal species chemically bonded to the carbon layer.
Abstract:
A filtration apparatus and method for separating filtrate and concentrate from a liquid solution are disclosed. The filtration apparatus contains a housing (1) having a discharge opening (11) therein and being capable of containing a fluid solution to be filtered therein. A filter unit (3) is insertable within the housing (1) such that a first side faces in the same direction as the discharge opening (11) of the housing (1). The filter unit contains a semipermeable membrane (17) located thereon and capable of separating filtrate and concentrate. At least one inlet (23) is located within the first side so that the semipermeable membrane (17) covers the inlet(s) (23).
Abstract:
A damage-resistant filter for use in subterranean wells has at least one layer of a filter medium (13), such as a sintered supported porous membrane, coaxially disposed about a perforated support member (11). The filter may also include a drainage layer (15) disposed between the inner support member and the filter medium, and a protective covering, such as a perforated cage (17), surrounding the filter medium (13). The filter is particularly suitable for removal of sand and other particulates from fluids produced in a well.
Abstract:
An improved cartridge-type fluid processing apparatus having a tubular housing disposed about and supporting a tubular porous element. First and second end pieces are welded to and seal first and second ends of the housing and the tubular porous element.
Abstract:
A method for filtering edible oils utilizing a backwashable filter assembly (10). A filter system having at least two filter assemblies (A, B) may be utilized to remove bleaching clay and/or nickel catalyst from oil being processed for human consumption. The filter assemblies may be connected in a tandem manner to provide continuous and uninterrupted filtering of the edible oil. Each filter assembly preferably comprises multiple, substantially cylindrical filter elements (18) having a porous filter medium which may be formed from polyaramid fibers. The filter elements are designed to withstand the elevated temperatures used in edible oil processing and for ease of cleaning during backwashing.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a melt-blown fibrous non-woven web with a narrow fiber diameter distribution, and a high degree of weight uniformity. The present invention also provides methods of preparing, processing and using such fibrous webs, as well as products incorporating such fibrous webs.
Abstract:
An apparatus (1) for detecting defects in porous elements (3) including systems and methods for quantifying acoustic signal data. A transducer (4) receives acoustic signals generated within a test chamber (2) by a porous element (3). A signal processing device (9) may be included for analyzing the acoustic signals received, for quantifying the acoustic signals, and for correlating the acoustic signals with physical attributes of the porous element (3).
Abstract:

Abstract:
A damage resistant sand screen assembly has at least one layer of a sintered porous medium (10, 11, 12), preferably a sintered metal membrane, coaxially disposed about and secured to a perforated core (1). The assembly may also include a woven wire mesh drainage layer (9) disposed between the perforated production tube (1) and the sintered porous medium (10, 11, 12), and a protective covering (13), preferably a woven wire mesh. The assembly is suitable for use in gravel pack (4), or it may be installed outside of agravel pack (4), such as on the end of a production pipe (17) or on a down-hole pump (18).
