Abstract: Techniques for transmitting data in a manner to support multi-user scheduling, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission, and interference cancellation are described. A base station assigns multiple time segments of a transmission time interval (TTI) to at least one terminal, maps data for each terminal to at least one time segment assigned to the terminal, and spreads the data in each time segment with at least one channelization code used in the TTI. A terminal receives an assignment of at least one time segment from among multiple time segments of the TTI, obtains input samples for the at least one time segment, and despreads the input samples with the at least one channelization code used in the TTI.

Abstract: A carrier recovery method and apparatus using multiple stages of carrier frequency recovery are disclosed. A receiver uses multiple frequency generation sources to generate carrier signals used to downconvert a received signal. An analog frequency reference having a wide frequency range and coarse frequency resolution is used in conjunction with a digital frequency reference having a narrow frequency range and fine frequency resolution. The multiple carrier signals are multiplied by a received signal to effect a multi-stage downconversion, resulting in a baseband signal. A frequency tracking module measures the residual frequency error present in the baseband signal. The measured residual frequency error is then used to adjust the frequencies of the carrier signals generated by the multiple frequency generation sources.

Abstract: Techniques to determine a set of rates for a set of data streams to be transmitted in a multi-channel communication system. A group of transmission channels to be used for each data stream is initially identified. An equivalent system for each group is then defined to have an AWGN (or flat) channel and a spectral efficiency equal to the average spectral efficiency of the transmission channels in the group. A metric for each group is then derived based on the associated equivalent system, e.g., set to the SNR needed by the equivalent system to support the average spectral efficiency. A rate for each data stream is then determined based on the metric associated with the data stream. The rate is deemed to be supported by the communication system if the SNR required to support the data rate by the communication system is less than or equal to the metric.

Abstract: Techniques for signaling power information to facilitate channel quality indicator (CQI) reporting are described. A Node B may send power information that may be used by a UE to determine a power per channelization code, POVS F. In one design, the power information includes a power offset between the power of a data channel, PHSPDSCH, and the power of a pilot channel. The Nod e B may determine PHSPDSCH based on the power available for the data channel , the number of available channelization codes, and a designated number of c hannelization codes. The UE may determine POVSF based on the power informati on from the Node B and the designated number of channelization codes. The UE may estimate at least one SINR of at least one transport block based on POV SF, determine CQI information for the transport block(s) based on the SINR, and send the CQI information to the Node B.

Abstract: Techniques for determining and reporting channel quality indicator (CQI) information are described. A user equipment (UE) may determine a transmit power per channelization code, POVSF, based on the available transmit power and a designated number of channelization codes, e.g., by uniformly distributing the available transmit power across all transport blocks and all of the designated number of channelization codes. The UE may estimate SINRs of multiple transport blocks based on POVSF, determine CQI indices for the transport blocks based on the SINRs, and send the CQI indices to a Node B. The Node B may send multiple transport blocks to the UE based on the CQI indices. The Node B may send the transport blocks (i) with the designated number of channelization codes at POVSF or (ii) with a second number of channelization codes at POVSF, with the transport block sizes being scaled based on the designated and second numbers of channelization codes.

Abstract: Techniques for receiving a MIMO transmission are described. A receiver pr ocesses received data for the MIMO transmission based on a front-end filter to obtain filtered data. The receiver further processes the filtered data ba sed on at least one first combiner matrix to obtain detected data for a firs t frame. The receiver demodulates and decodes this detected data to obtain d ecoded data for the first frame. The receiver then processes the filtered da ta based on at least one second combiner matrix and the decoded data for the first frame to cancel interference due to the first frame and obtain detect ed data for a second frame. The receiver processes this detected data to obt ain decoded data for the second frame. The front-end filter processes non on -time signal components in the received data. Each combiner matrix combines on-time signal components in the filtered data to obtain detected data for a channelization code.

Abstract: Techniques for receiving a MIMO transmission are described. A receiver processes received data from multiple receive antennas in multiple stages. A first stage performs front-end filtering/equalization on the received data with a front-end filter to process non on-time signal components in the multiple received signals. A second stage processes the filtered data with one or more combiner matrices to combine on-time signal components for multiple transmitted signals. For a MIMO-CDM transmission, a single front-end filter may be used for all channelization codes, and a different combiner matrix may be used for each channelization code. Partitioning the receiver processing into multiple stages simplifies derivation of the front-end filter and combiner matrices while achieving good performance. The front-end filter and combiner matrices may be updated separately at the same or different rates.

Abstract: Systems, methods and apparatus for configuring and accessing a random access channel in a CDMA communication system are disclosed. The number of users supported by a random access channel can be optimized by assigning a distinct time of arrival to each of a plurality of users. Each of the users can be time synchronized and can transmit data at a time that compensates for a propagation delay to allow the data to arrive at the destination receiver at the assigned time. In a CDMA system, each of the users can transmit data that is spread with the same spreading code, provided the cross correlation properties of the code are sufficient to allow identification of a source that is time offset relative to another user. The time of arrival can be determined based on the number of active users, and can be assigned as often as each transmission by each user.

Abstract: Systems and methods for adaptively allocating resources between a dedicated reference signal and a traffic signal are disclosed. In an exemplary embodiment, a wireless communication system 100 includes a base station 404. The base station 404 includes a receiver 428 that receives a quality metric 432 from a remote station 106. The quality metric 432 indicates the quality of a signal transmitted from the base station 404 and received by the remote station 106. The base station 404 also includes a resource allocation component 434 that uses the quality metric 432 to allocate a resource between the traffic signal 422 and the dedicated reference signal 418. The base station 404 also includes a transmitter 426 that transmits the traffic signal 422 and the dedicated reference signal 418 to the remote station 106.
