Abstract: A user terminal supports multiple spatial multiplexing (SM) modes such as a steered mode and a non-steered mode. For data transmission, multiple data streams are coded and modulated in accordance with their selected rates to obtain multiple data symbol streams. These streams are then spatially processed in accordance with a selected SM mode (e.g., with a matrix of steering vectors for the steered mode and with the identity matrix for the non-steered mode) to obtain multiple transmit symbol streams for transmission from multiple antennas. For data reception, multiple received symbol streams are spatially processed in accordance with the selected SM mode ( e.g ., with a matrix of eigenvectors for the steered mode and with a spatial filter matrix for the non-steered mode) to obtain multiple recovered data symbol streams. These streams are demodulated and decoded in accordance with their selected rates to obtain multiple decoded data streams.

Abstract: A multiple-access MIMO WLAN system that employs MIMO, OFDM, and TDD. The system (1) uses a channel structure with a number of configurable transport channels, (2) supports multiple rates and transmission modes, which are configurable based on channel conditions and user terminal capabilities, (3) employs a pilot structure with several types of pilot (e.g., beacon, MIMO, steered reference, and carrier pilots) for different functions, (4) implements rate, timing, and power control loops for proper system operation, and (5) employs random access for system access by the user terminals, fast acknowledgement, and quick resource assignments. Calibration may be performed to account for differences in the frequency responses of transmit/receive chains at the access point and user terminals. The spatial processing may then be simplified by taking advantage of the reciprocal nature of the downlink and uplink and the calibration.

Abstract: Techniques for facilitating random access in wireless multiple-access communication systems. A random access channel (RACH) is defined to comprise a "fast" RACH (F-RACH) and a "slow" RACH (S-RACH). The F-RACH and S-RACH can efficiently support user terminals in different operating states and employ different designs. The F-RACH can be used to quickly access the system, and the S-RACH is more robust and can support user terminals in various operatin g states and conditions. The F-RACH may be used by user terminals that have registered with the system and can compensate for their round trip delays (RTDs) by properly advancing their transmit timing. The S-RACH may be used b y user terminals that may or may not have registered with the system, and may or may not be able to compensate for their RTDs. The user terminals may use the F- RACH or S-RACH, or both, to gain access to the system.

Abstract: Un procedimiento de acceso a un sistema de comunicación inalámbrico de acceso múltiple, de múltiples entradas y múltiples salidas (MIMO) (100), que comprende: recibir información del sistema mediante un canal de difusión, BCH, (310) en un enlace descendente; transmitir una solicitud de acceso mediante un canal de acceso aleatorio, RACH, (350), en un enlace ascendente, en el que la solicitud de acceso se transmite basándose en la información de sistema recibida, caracterizada por monitorizar el BCH (310) para determinar si está activado un bit de acuse de recibo del RACH; procesar, en respuesta a la determinación de que el bit de acuse de recibo del RACH está activado, un canal de control directo, FCCH, (320) en el enlace descendente, para obtener elementos de información de Tipo 3 de IE que contienen el acuse de recibo de la solicitud de acceso transmitida; y repetir la recepción, transmisión, monitorización y procesamiento si el acuse de recibo no se recibe dentro de un período de tiempo predeterminado.

Abstract: A method of generating pilots in a wireless multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication system is provided and involves obtaining a set of pilot symbols for each antenna in a plurality of antennas. The set of pilot symbols is designated for transmission on a set of subbands and selected to have small peak-to-average variation in a waveform generated based on the pilot symbols. An orthogonal sequence is obtained for each antenna in the plurality of antennas. The plurality of antennas are assigned different orthogonal sequences. The set of pilot symbol for each antenna is covered with the orthogonal sequence for the antenna to obtain a sequence of covered pilot symbols for the antenna. A plurality of sequences of covered pilot symbols for a plurality of orthogonal pilots are obtained for the plurality of antennas.

Abstract: Pilots suitable for use in MIMO systems and capable of supporting various functions are described. The various types of pilot include - a beacon pilot, a MIMO pilot, a steered reference or steered pilot, and a carrier pilot. The beacon pilot is transmitted from all transmit antennas and may be used for timing and frequency acquisition. The MIMO pilot is transmitted from all transmit antennas but is covered with different orthogonal codes assigned to the transmit antennas. The MIMO pilot may be used for channel estimation. The steered reference is transmitted on specific eigenmodes of a MIMO channel and is user terminal specific. The steered reference may be used for channel estimation. The carrier pilot may be transmitted on designated subbands/antennas and may be used for phase tracking of a carrier signal. Various pilot transmission schemes may be devised based on different combinations of these various types of pilot.

Abstract: Techniques for efficiently deriving a transmit steering matrix and sending feedback for this matrix are described. A receiver determines a set of parameters defining a transmit steering matrix to be used for transmission from a transmitter to the receiver. The receiver may derive the transmit steering matrix based on a set of transformation matrices, which may be used for multiple iterations of Jacobi rotation to zero out off-diagonal elements of a channel matrix. The receiver may then determine the set of parameters based on the transformation matrices. The set of parameters may comprise at least one angle, at least one value, at least one index, etc., for each transformation matrix. The receiver sends the set of parameters defining the transmit steering matrix (instead of elements of the transmit steering matrix) to the transmitter for use by the transmitter to derive the transmit steering matrix.
