Abstract:
Methods and apparatus for efficient data distribution to a group of users. In an aspect, a method is provided for distributing information. The method includes detecting one or more requests for the information, determining whether the information is to be broadcast, and transmitting the information in a broadcast transmission based on the determination. In another aspect, an apparatus is provided for distributing information. The apparatus includes a detector configured to detect one or more requests for the information, a determination module configured to determine whether the information is to be broadcast, and a transmitter configured to transmit the information in a broadcast transmission based on the determination.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for adding a member to an active call in a group communication network provides for receiving a member list from a user and sending a request to a server to add the member list to the active group call. The method and apparatus further provides for announcing each member in the member list that they are being added to the group call, receiving acknowledgement from a member who wishes to participate in the group call, and forwarding media to the member. The method and apparatus also provides for a significant reduction in the actual total dormancy wakeup time and latency by exchanging group call signaling even when mobiles are dormant and no traffic channel is active.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for joining a user to a call in a group communication network provides for receiving an indication from a user who wishes to initiate a group call and sending a request to a server to add the user to the group call if the group call is in progress. The method and apparatus also provides for announcing the group call to the user, receiving acknowledgement from the user who wishes to participate in the announced group call, and forwarding media to the user after its traffic channel is re-established. The method and apparatus also provides for a significant reduction in the actual total dormancy wakeup time and latency by exchanging group call signaling even when mobiles are dormant and no traffic channel is active.

A method and apparatus for initiating a group call in a group communication network provides for receiving a request for initiating a group call based on a member and initiating the group call based on the received member list. The method and apparatus also provides for announcing the group call to each member in the member list, receiving acknowledgement from a member who wishes to participate in the group call, and forwarding media to the member after its traffic channel is re-established. The method and apparatus also provides for a significant reduction in the actual total dormancy wakeup time and latency by exchanging group call signaling even when mobiles are dormant and no traffic channel is active.

Abstract:
A method and apparatus for removing a member from an active call in a group communication network provides for receiving a member list from a user and sending a request to a server to remove the member list from the active group call. The method and apparatus further provides for announcing each member in the member list that they are being removed from the group call, receiving acknowledgement from each member in the member list, and sending a response to the request, indicating that the member list has been removed.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus provides for delivering information to an idle mobile station in a group communication network (100) includes delivering the information to the mobile station in special form, e.g., short data burst (SDB) form, if the information is smaller than a predetermined size limit. In one embodiment, the method and apparatus provides for encapsulating the information inside a frame, forwarding the frame to a server (110) for delivery to the mobile station (102, 104, 106), and causing the server (110) to extract the information from the frame and deliver the information to the mobile station on a forward common channel. In one embodiment, the method and apparatus provides for receiving information for delivery to the mobile station (102, 104, 106), the information being tagged for delivery on a forward common channel, and delivering the information to the mobile station (102, 104, 106) on the forward common channel. In one aspect, the method delivers the information when the mobile station (102, 104, 106) is in idle state with no traffic channel.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for providing fair access to members of a group communication system in which the members experience differing signaling delays. Members of the communication system send a transmission request to an arbitration device when they wish to communicate with other members. The transmission requests are ultimately received by the arbitration device. A time window is opened by a processor located at the arbitration device at the time an initial transmission request is received. The time window is used to treat all transmission requests that are received within the time window as having been received at the same time. Any transmission requests that are received within the time window are included in determining which member should be granted an exclusive transmission privilege.
Abstract:
Embodiments are directed to determining whether to permit a server-arbitrated communication session at a wireless communications device within a wireless communications system. The wireless communications device receives a request to participate in the server-arbitrated communication session. The wireless communications device obtains information related to a current location of the wireless communications device. The wireless communications device determines whether the obtained information satisfies one or more conditions of restriction and/or permission for participation of the wireless communication device in server-arbitrated communication session. The wireless communications device selectively restricts itself from participating in the server-arbitrated communication session based on this determination.
