    Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide a new monomer having a specific structure, serving as the essential constituent for polymers useful as a membrane material with high coefficients of permeation and separation for gases such as oxygen and carbon dioxide. CONSTITUTION:The objective monomer having structure of formula III (e.g. a compound of formula IV) can be obtained by reaction of a pyridyl-contg. silanol compound of formula I (R and R are each 1-6C alkyl; q is 1-6) with an alkali metal compound such as sodium hydride followed by reaction with a chlorosilane compound of formula II (X is H, halogen, etc.; R is the same with R ; p is 2-6; m is 1-3) in a solvent such as THF in an inert gas atmosphere.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide the subject compound useful as a synthetic intermediate for a monomer for the synthesis of a side-chain type polymer liquid crystal exhibiting stable liquid crystal nature at a relatively low temperature. CONSTITUTION:A compound of formula I (R and R are alkyl or phenyl; X is single bond, O, COO or OCO; Q is mesogen group; p is 2-20), e.g. 4-(3- methylethoxysilylpropoxy)-4'-cyanobiphenyl. The compound can be produced by reacting an alkenyl compound of formula II (g is 0-18) having a mesogen group (e.g. 4-allyloxy-4'-cyanobiphenyl) with a compound of formula III (R is alkyl) in the presence of a hydrosilylation catalyst and hydrolyzing the resultant compound of formula IV. A side-chain type polymer liquid crystal having siloxane bond on a spacer can be produced by synthesizing a monomer having a mesogen group and a polymerizable group bonded through a siloxane bond using the compound of formula I and polymerizing the synthesized monomer.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the titled copolymer capable of giving membranes for effectively separating gas or liquid mixtures with excellent permeability and separability, by reaction of a poly-disubstituted acetylene with a strong base followed by with a cyclosiloxane compound and stopping the reaction with a terminator.     Abstract: PURPOSE:A graft copolymer excellent in membrane forming property, film strength, gas permeability coefficient, etc., and suitable for the production of membranes for separation of a gas mixture, obtained by incorporating a polyorganosiloxane chain in polyphenylene oxide. CONSTITUTION:The purpose graft copolymer is obtained by reacting polyphenylene oxide of formula I (wherein A is a halogen, methyl or the like) with a strong base and reacting the product with a polyorganosiloxane having a reactive group on one end, of formula II (wherein X is a halogen, Y is a bivalent organic group, Z is a polyorganosiloxane chain and R -R are each alkyl, phenyl or the like).     Abstract: PURPOSE:To produce a polyphenylene oxide derivative excellent in mechanical strength and durability, by reacting a specified halogenated polyphenylene oxide with a hydroxyl group-containing compound in the presence of a base. Si as expressed by the specified formula. CONSTITUTION:A polymer comprising the recurrent unit as expressed by the formula, obtd. by polymerizing 1-trimethylsilyl propyne in a solvent such as toluene using tantalum pentachloride, etc. as catalyst, is redissolved in toluene. A homogeneous film is obtd. by flowing the soln. on a 'Teflon(R)' plate and evaporating the solvent. The film is fitted to a permeation cell for pervaporation and used for separation of water/alcohol mixture, etc.
