SOLUTION: In the fuel cell having a structure in which a negative electrode 1 and a positive electrode 2 are opposed via a proton conductor 3, an enzyme/electron mediator fixing electrode in which diaphorase 12 and an electron mediator 13 are fixed on an electrode 11 such as carbon is employed as the negative electrode 1, and the NADH solution is used as fuel. The concentration of the NADH solution is 2 to 130 mM, and preferably 3 to 40 mM. Instead of the NADH solution, an NADPH solution or a solution containing NADH and NADPH may be used. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photoelectric conversion element with a high photoelectric conversion rate having a semiconductor layer containing very little residual organic substance, composed of semiconductor fine particles having a small crystal diameter, large specific area, and a crystal structure with high photocatalytic activity, and to provide a manufacturing method of the same. SOLUTION: The semiconductor layer 2 composed of semiconductor fine particles is formed by applying and baking a paste of a mixture of semiconductor fine particles of titanium oxide fine particles or the like and a binder composed of polymeric compound on a transparent conductive substrate 1, and then, residual organic substance remaining in the semiconductor layer 2 is removed by irradiating ultraviolet rays on the semiconductor layer 2 and utilizing the photocatalytic activity of the semiconductor fine particles. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for controlling the conductivity type of a protein semiconductor which allows easy control of the conductivity type of the protein semiconductor, and also provide a method for producing a protein semiconductor and a method for producing a p-n junction using the same.SOLUTION: The conductivity type of a protein semiconductor is controlled by controlling the electric charge of the total amino acid residues, and thus a p-type protein semiconductor or an n-type protein semiconductor is produced. Then, a p-n junction is produced by using the p-type protein semiconductor and the n-type protein semiconductor. The electric charge of the total amino acid residues is controlled by substituting one or more acidic, basic or neutral amino acid residues contained in the protein by amino acid residues having properties different therefrom, chemically modifying one or more acidic, basic or neutral amino acid residues contained in the protein, or controlling the polarity of a medium surrounding the protein.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple method for obtaining a recombinant bilirubin oxidase derived from an incomplete filamentous bacterium Myrothecium verrucaria having high expression and high activity.SOLUTION: The method for producing a recombinant bilirubin oxidase includes a step of transferring a bilirubin oxidase gene derived from an incomplete filamentous bacterium Myrothecium verrucaria to Escherichia coli and expressing the gene. The recombinant bilirubin oxidase is obtained by the production method. The recombinant bilirubin oxidase has higher enzyme activity than a natural type bilirubin oxidase derived from an incomplete filamentous bacterium Myrothecium verrucaria.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a biofuel cell having a mechanism for automatically recovering from the fuel concentration gradient or the pH gradient in a fuel solution which occurs as the oxidation reduction reaction of fuel progresses, and from decrease in battery output due to temperature variation in the vicinity of an electrode.SOLUTION: The biofuel cell A has a polymer gel 2 which swells or contracts reversibly in response to characteristic change of a fuel solution 3 touching the surface and/or the interior of an electrode 1. Since the polymer gel 2 swells or contracts in response to characteristic change of the touching fuel solution 3, diffusibility of the fuel solution 3 or the substance in the solution can be enhanced or the fuel solution 3 can be agitated in the biofuel cell A.
