Abstract: An initialization method of an optical recording medium having a plurality of optical recording layers capable of reducing uneven initialization due to light interference caused at the time of initialization without deterioration of information recording/reproducing signal characteristics of the recording layers is provided. An initialization method of an optical recording medium, wherein a second optical recording layer and a first optical recording layer are successively stacked via an interlayer on a substrate, a protective layer is formed further on the first optical recording layer, a recording film in the first optical recording layer comprises a phase change type recording material, and a recording/reproducing light is irradiated from the protective film side at the time of recording/reproducing, a material composing the interlayer has a sufficient transmittance for a wavelength of the recording/reproducing light and absorption for an initializing light, and, in a step of initializing by irradiating an initializing light on the first optical recording layer from the protective film side, laser light having a wavelength range of 200 nm to 400 nm is used as the initializing light.

Abstract: An optical recording medium is capable of linear recording in a photon mode. An organic material changed in molecular orientation on light illumination to exhibit birefringence is used as a recording material. For example, a recording layer having, as a recording material, an organic material changed in molecular orientation caused by trans-cis rearrangement, is changed in birefringence with changes in the molecular orientation of the organic material. The recording system which utilizes the changes in the molecular orientation of the organic material has linear characteristics and gives outputs different depending on e.g., the degree or the angle of orientation, thus enabling multi-valued recording.

Abstract: A light orientation film and a liquid crystal thin film are formed adjacent to each other. Light is irradiated to the light orientation film and the liquid crystal thin film, so as to cause the light orientation film to be orientated while viscosity of the liquid crystal thin film is lowered by a temperature increase by the light irradiation, so that an intermolecular force on the boundary between the light orientation film and the liquid crystal thin film causes the liquid crystal molecules in the liquid crystal thin film to be orientated according to the orientation of the light orientation film. By this orientation of the liquid crystal molecules, recording information is maintained. Thus, it is possible to realize a sufficient signal amount while using the light orientation film as well as to obtain a thermal stability and a stability against light irradiation.

Abstract: To provide a high density optical recording medium, capable of realizing the complete compatibility with a phase change recording medium with respect to an optical pickup or a drive device, using a short wavelength light for achieving a high recording density. The present invention provides an optical recording medium configuration for directly reading out the change of the reflectance without using the phase modulation method. An optical recording medium according to the present invention is an optical recording medium having a recording film of a single layer or multiple layer structure on a substrate (1), wherein the recording film is mainly made of an organic substance material layer (2) for absorbing and decomposing a laser beam, and generating the refractive index change as well as the reflectance of the optical recording medium with respect to a reproduction laser beam of a 380 nm to 450 nm wavelength is 15% to 25% before the decomposition, and 0% to 10% after the decomposition.

Abstract: An optical disk recording apparatus, an optical disk recording method, an optical disk playback apparatus, and an optical disk playback method are provided. For example, the present invention is applied to a high-sound-quality optical disk (4, 6Z) which can be played back by a conventional compact disk player, and aims at supplying still higher-quality contents which can be played back even by a conventional optical disk apparatus. Second information (SC) is recorded by partial changes of optical characteristics, such changes being of such a degree which does not affect detection results of first and second areas which are detected by the irradiation of a laser beam (L2).

Abstract: Audio data of 20 bits is separated into first data of upper 16 bits and second data of lower 4 bits. EFM modulation data is formed from the first data. A laser beam is on/off controlled in correspondence to the logic level of channel data obtained by NRZI modulating a serial data train. The first data, therefore, is recorded in a manner similar to the case of a compact disc. Each pit is controlled so as to have a displacement in the right/left direction for the track center in accordance with the second data and the deviated pit is formed. When data is recorded by the displacement of the pit, since a high frequency component of a tracking error signal changes upon reproduction, the second data can be extracted from the tracking error signal.
