Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To extend the service life of a light source by restraining the brightness drop of an organic EL element of a display device using the organic EL element as the light source. SOLUTION: At the rear of liquid crystal elements (11R), (11G) and (11B), each for displaying one component of a primary color, a red EL light source (10R), a green EL light source (10G) and a blue EL light source (10B) for emitting red color light, green color light, and blue color light are disposed, respectively. Each EL light source includes an organic EL element in which an organic thin film emits light. Each EL light source has a structure in which an organic luminescent layer 14 is sandwiched between an ITO electrode (13) and a metal electrode (15) which have striped patterns which are orthogonal to each other, and sections (luminescent sections) at which the striped patterns of the ITO electrode (13) and the metal electrode (15) intersect with each other emit light. The luminescent sections are arrayed two-dimensionally on a glass substrate (12) and illuminate the entire display area of the liquid crystal display element. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To project a bright picture by increasing the quantity of light which can be utilized by a projection lens in a projection type display device using an organic EL element as a light source. SOLUTION: A red EL light source 30R, a green EL light source 30G and a blue EL light source 30B respectively radiating a red light beam, a green light beam and a blue light beam are arranged at the back surfaces of respective liquid crystal display elements 31R, 31G and 31B displaying one color component of the primary colors. The respective light sources are constituted by arraying organic EL elements 301R, 301G and 301B and arraying lenses 302R, 302G and 302B formed corresponding to the respective organic EL elements. The organic EL elements are arranged at positions being more distant from the lenses with respect to the focal points of the lenses. The divergence of the light beams radiated from the organic EL elements is suppressed so as to illuminate the liquid crystal elements thereafter. The pictures displayed at the liquid crystal display elements are synthesized by a dichroic prism 32 and projected on a screen 34 by being enlarged by a projection lens 33.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin light guide plate which is placed before objects to be illuminated, such as characters and images which are printed on a paper, and is capable of partially illuminating these objects from a close distance and an illumination device. SOLUTION: When the incident rays from the end face of the light guide plate 1 arrive at projecting shapes 11, the light may be emitted from the light guide plate 1. This light transmission plate 1 has a function to project rays and to allow the transmission of the rays in a direction approximately perpendicular to the plate plate with substantially no dispersion thereof. The light guide plate 1 is capable of making one-dimensional illumination while the light guide range is not widened as the light transmission plate 1 has light transmission layers 91 and reflection layers 92. As a result, the surface illumination device which is placed before the bodies to be illuminated and is capable of making partial illumination is embodied.
