Abstract: 15,401. Thomas, J. Nov. 1. Auxiliary actuating- gear; cam - actuated pumps; lever-actuated pumps; double-acting bucket - pumps; multiple-delivery bucket pumps; combined piston and bucket pumps; pumps in series; regulating delivery by closing suction valves; suction reservoirs; v a l v e s , arrangement of. - A mechanical lubricator comprises one or more double-acting pumps in which a single valve, preferably cylindrical, is positively moved by the pumping strokes of two plungers. In the form shown in Fig. 1, two double-acting pumps are combined, each comprising two parallel tubular plungers 4, 4 and 5, 5 working respectively in chambers 16, 9 and 16 , 9 . The plungers 4, 4 are connected by a crosshead 22, and the plungers 5, 5 by a double cross-head 23, in which rotates the actuating cam or eccentric 33. The plungers 4, 5 are in alinement and connected by a hollow member 6 containing a chamber 12, in which the cylindrical valve 13 works. The pump chambers 16, 16 are formed in adjustable screws 17 mounted in the walls of the reservoir, and the chambers 9, 9 in a stationary member 7 mounted in the reservoir. The chamber 12 is connected to the chambers 9, 9 by ports 14, 15 and passages 14 , 15 , and with the chambers 16, 16 by the passages 11. During the suction stroke of the plunger 4, oil enters the chamber 16 through the port 18 or channels in the outer surface of the plunger, and during the return stroke, this oil passes through the passage 11 and forces the valve 13 to the right and passes through the duct 14 to the chamber 9. During the next suction stroke of the plunger 4, half of the oil in the chamber 9 is forced through the plunger 4 into the delivery pipe 21, and half fills the space 20 evacuated by the outer part of the plunger which has half the crosssectional area of the part working in the barrel 9. During the next return stroke of the plunger 4, the oil in the space 20 is forced into the pipe 21. The same series of operations take place in the other pump 5, 5 . The crosssectional area of the outer end of the plunger 4 is the same as that of the inner end of the plunger 4 . The eccentric 33 is driven from the shaft 38 through ratchet gearing. The cam shaft 34 may be actuated by a hand-whee! for flushing purposes. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, two plungers 43, 43 are in alinement and connected to an intermediate piece 6 reciprocating in a bearing 46 screwed into the wall of the reservoir. Oil enters the pump chambers 44, 44 through channels 55, 55 in the plungers and, on the delivery strokes, passes through the ports 48, 48 to the delivery pipe 51. The plungers are reciprocated by a lever 59 actuated by a cam &c. 33 driven as before described. In both forms, the delivery may be regulated by adjusting the screws 17, 17 &c. so as to vary the point at which communication between the pump chambers 16 &c. and the reservoir is cut off during the delivery strokes. A number of pumps may be mounted in the same reservoir.

Abstract: 13,276. Thomas, J. Aug. 26, 1912. [Cognate Application, 13,277/13.] Fire-bridges; baffles. -Air is supplied to the rear of a furnace through a special passage in the fire - bridge controlled by a damper as described in Specification 23,797/10, and dog-pieces are provided for securing the bridge in position. The airpassage 13, Fig. 1, is inclined at the bottom to facilitate the escape of dust or ashes, and its outlet at the top faces upwards and rearwards. The passage is of uniform sectional area throughout, and is the full width of the furnace at the top. Dogpieces 22, Fig. 3, bearing against the side and top of the bridge and the side 27 of the furnace, secure the bridge in position. The thrust at the top of the bridge is taken by studs 28. A baffle-plate or the like may be secured in a similar manner.

Abstract: 24,329. Thomas, W., and Thomas, J. Nov. 2. Treadle mechanism. - In treadle gear for cycles, of the kind in which oscillating levers S are connected by one-way clutches T to a rotatable shaft within the rear-wheel hub, the motion being transmitted from the shaft to the hub by a twin-chain gearing-up mechanism, a supplementary hub X is provided upon a shaft disposed immediately in front of the road wheel between the lower fork members U, this hub being furnished at one end with a pair of chainwheels R, V which co-operate with a wheel D mounted upon the tubular driving-shaft C and with a small free-wheel B upon the road-wheel hub. The wheel D and the one-way clutch T at the right-hand end are mounted upon a screw-threaded cone D integral with the shaft C; the one-way clutch at the opposite end is mounted upon a cone J screwed upon the driving-shaft and secured by a screw L engaging one of a number of grooves G, Fig. 2, running across the thread of the shaft.

Abstract: 10,310. Thomas, J. and Lewis, J. L. April 30. Buffers.-The spring buffers of wagons are retained in their casings by a divided ring and a collar of special form, which also serves as an abutment for the volute spring. The bufferplunger c is recessed at c , and in the recess a divided ring d is placed. A disk or washer e keeps the ring in place by bearing on the outer surface of the ring and also on the part of the stem beyond the recess and on a reduced portion of the stem. The tubular extension e' fitting this reduced portion may be made separate from the disk. A pin f holds the parts together.

Abstract: 18,707. Thomas, J. Sept. 16. Doors.-The door frame for the fire-place of a domestic washing boiler or set-pot is made reversible, and the door is made double-faced, so that it may be arranged to open either from the left or from the right. The top and bottom sides of a rectangular or other frame a, Fig. 1, are prolonged to form extensions a , which may be connected by vertical webs, and which are preferably thicker at the back than at the front, so as to be more easily secured in the brickwork. The door, Fig. 2, is secured in the frame by means of pivot pins b engaging with holes a' formed in the top and bottom sides. A gap b , or an incline, is formed in the upper edge of the door, in order that when the upper pin has been inserted the door may ba raised for facilitating the insertion of the lower pin, a corresponding recess being provided in the brickwork. The door is kept closed by its own weight, and is provided with a handle on each face, and also with a hole b , which is stated to prevent cracking. The door abuts against an upright rabbet a , Fig. 1, or against inner ledges. By removing the door, turning the frame upside down, and re-inserting the door, it may be made to open from the opposite side. The Provisional Specification states that the pivot pins may engage with holes in lugs, which may be cast with or bolted to the frame, and that a fastening device may be used.
