Abstract: PURPOSE:To illuminate the entire surface of the display screen over a long time by installing an amalgam, which adsorbs mercury in the glass tube while an electric discharge lamp is turned off and from which mercury is supplied to around the anode during lighting of the lamp, around the anode in the glass tube. CONSTITUTION:During the d.c. lighting of an electric-discharge lamp 2 for a display element, positive ions of mercury are produced in a glass tube 3 and they are gradually drawn toward a a preheating cathode 7 located in the end of the glass tube 3 opposite to its end where a display screen 4a is located. And as the result, the amount of mercury existing around an anode 9 markedly decreases and the pressure of mercuric vapor existing around the anode 9 begins to decrease. Due to an amalgam structure 15 located near the anode 9 in the glass tube 3, an amount of mercury corresponding to the decrease in the pressure of mercuric vapor existing around the anode 9 is discharged from the amalgam structure 15 and therefore mercury is supplied around the anode 9. Consequently, and cataphoresis is prevented which is characterized by the darkening of the area around the anode 9 caused in accordance with variation the amount of mercury.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To prevent any decrease in the luminous efficiency of a low pressure mercuric vapor electric-discharge lamp and cause the entire outer tube to homogeneously emit intense light over a long time by installing an amalgam for controlling the internal mercuric vapor pressure of the inner tubes, restricting the discharge path, in the inner tubes. CONSTITUTION:Inner tubes 5 and 5 restricts the shape of the discharge path formed between electrodes 8 and 8 to a shape formed by arranging two U- shapes.
