    Abstract: The present invention generally relates to an apparatus for positioning a tool at a well site. The apparatus includes a first arm rotationally connected to a guide on a column. The apparatus further includes a second arm rotationally connected to the first arm. The second arm is also connected to a tool attachment member at a pivot point, wherein the pivot point is offset from the centerline of the tool. Additionally, the apparatus includes a flexible tension member having one end operatively connected to the guide and another end connected to the tool attachment member at a location closer to the centerline of the tool than the pivot point, wherein the flexible tension member is configured to maintain the tool in a specific orientation around the pivot point during the positioning operation. In a further aspect, a method of positioning a tool at a wellsite is provided.

    Abstract: In one embodiment, a tubular gripping assembly for use with a top drive to handle a tubular includes a tubular gripping tool having a mandrel and gripping elements operatively coupled to the mandrel; and a link assembly attached to the mandrel, wherein a load of the link assembly is transferred to the mandrel. In another embodiment, the tubular gripping assembly includes a swivel having selectively actuatable seals. In yet another embodiment, the tubular gripping assembly includes a thread compensator to facilitate tubular make-up. In yet another embodiment, the tubular gripping assembly includes a wedge lock release apparatus to facilitate the release of gripping elements from the tubular.

    Abstract: Methods and associated apparatus for rotating and connecting a tubular 503 are described. The tubular 503 rotating apparatus possesses first and second arms 510, 520, each with a respective roller 541, 542 and a third roller 543 is also provided. The arms 510, 520 are simultaneously adjustable to retain the tubular 503. The third roller 543 urges the tubular 503 against the first and second rollers 541, 542. At least one of the said rollers 541, 542, 543 is actuatable to rotate the tubular 503. The tubular connecting apparatus comprises a tubular handling member (figure 15, 700) with a plurality of rollers (figure 15, 741,742) that are adjustable to retain a first tubular (figure 15, 703). A guide member (figure 15, 710) is also present, located below each of the plurality of rollers (figure 15, 741,742), so that adjusting the rollers (figure 15, 741,742) also adjusts the guide member (figure 15, 710). Therefore the guide member (figure 15, 710) can surround the second tubular (figure 15, 704) and bring the first tubular (figure 15, 703) into engagement with the second tubular (figure 15, 704).

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for handling tubulars is provided. In one aspect, th e present invention provides a spinner having a first arm having a first rolle r and a second arm having a second roller, the first arm and the second arm simultaneously adjustable to retain the tubular. The apparatus also includes a third roller capable of urging the tubular against the first and second rollers, wherein at least one of the first, second, and third rollers is actuatable to rotate the tubular. In one embodiment, the spinner further comprises a fluid operated cylinder for adjusting the first arm and the second arm. The arms are adjusted by actuating the cylinder extend or retract the first arm and the second arm. In another embodiment, t he first arm and the second arm are coupled together and may retract or extend simultaneously. In another embodiment still, the arms may include a cam surface to move the rollers closer together to adjust to the size of the tubular being retained. In another embodiment still, at least one of the rollers is equipped with a motor to supply torque to the tubular. In another aspect, the spinner is used in combination with a tong assembly to make up or break up a tubular connection.
