    Abstract: A fuel composition comprises a residual mineral hydrocarbon oil, such as a petroleum oil, containing a small amount of vanadium, and a phosphorus containing material which is incorporated in the oil, at least in part, by reacting the oil or a fraction thereof with a phosphorizing agent; the ash produced on combustion of the fuel should contain at least 3 mols. of phosphorus per mol. of vanadium (calculated as the pentoxide). Phosphorizing agents referred to are phosphorus, phosphorus pentoxide, phosphoric acids, phosphorus pentasulphide and sesquisulphide, phosphorus trichloride and pentachloride and phosphorus oxychloride. Oil-soluble alkaline earth metal compounds, for example the salts of organic acids such as naphthenic or sulphonic acids, or the metal derivatives of phosphorized crude mineral oils of paraffinic, naphthenic, or asphaltic character, phosphorized polyisobutylene, alcohols, phenols or phenol sulphides may be added to the fuel; compounds referred to are P2S5 or P2O5 treated alkalin earth metal compounds of alkylated phenol sulphides, for example P2S5 treated barium iso-octyl phenol sulphide; alternatively, the alkaline earth metal compound, for example the hydroxides or other bases of calcium and barium, may be reacted directly with the fuel. The fuels may be used in gas turbines or high pressure steam or mercury boilers.

    Abstract: A lubricating grease, especially suitable for the lubrication of railway car journals mounted in roller bearings, comprises a major proportion of a mineral lubricating oil with a viscosity index of at least 50, a minor proportion of a sodium-containing soap of a fatty material with an iodine number between 15 and 40 (this fatty material comprising a major proportion of 12-hydroxy-stearic acid and a minor proportion of an unsaturated fatty acid with 12-20 carbon atoms in the molecule), 0.2-1.0 per cent. by weight of glycerine or a glycol, and a trace of water. If desired, the sodium-containing soap may be a soda-lime soap, while the unsaturated fatty acid may be oleic acid or fatty acids of acidless tallow or cottonseed oil. The glycol may be a polyethylene glycol of molecular weight below 1,500. The grease may also contain 0.5-4 per cent. by weight of a sodium phosphate containing two or more atoms of sodium per molecule, particularly di- or tri-sodium orthophosphate. Other ingredients which may be present in the grease are antioxidants, metal deactivators, tackiness agents and viscosity index improvers. The grease may be prepared by making a concentrate of the sodium-containing soap in a mineral lubricating oil of viscosity index below that desired in the final product, cooking the mixture to dehydrate it, working in additional mineral lubricating oil of higher viscosity index to bring the average viscosity index up to at least 80, cooling while working and adding the glycerine or glycol during cooling. The sodium phosphate may be added to the concentrate before the cooking stage. In an example, a lubricating grease is described which consists of mineral lubricating oil, soda and lime soaps of 12-hydroxy-stearic acid and oleic acid, trisodium orthophosphate, glycerine and water. For comparison purposes, greases are described which consist of mineral lubricating oil, trisodium orthophosphate and (1) soda-lime soaps of 12-hydroxy-stearic acid and/or stearic acid, and sodium petroleum sulphonate, (2) soda-lime soaps of 12-hydroxy-stearic acid and stearic acid, and glycerine or (3) soda-lime soaps of 12-hydroxy-stearic acid and oleic acid. Specifications 706,555 and 727,153 are referred to.
