Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus capable of turning on a lamp, which is bad in the dark startability, without increasing an equipment cost, and to provide its control method.
SOLUTION: The apparatus includes a reflective original lamp used as a light source for irradiating the surface of a reflective original with light, a carriage which is mounted with the reflective original lamp and an image sensor, which detects and converts light into electric signals, and reciprocates in a sub-scanning direction, an indicator lamp that emits light to indicate the status of a device, and a decision unit which decides whether the reflective original lamp lights up by the use of the image sensor. When it is decided by the decision unit that the reflective original lamp does not light up, the carriage is moved to a prescribed position to enable the indicator lamp to irradiate the reflective original lamp with light.
