[Also in Division C1] A method of rendering oxidation-resistant an ammonia synthesis catalyst comprising metallic iron and one or more promoter compounds comprises treating it with ammonia at a temperature in the range 300‹-500‹C. and at an ammonia concentration such that iron nitride formation takes place and then subjecting it to oxidation at such a temperature that any pyrophoric iron remaining after the ammonia treatment is converted to oxide with decomposition of a substantial proportion of iron nitride. Such a catalyst may comprise Fe 2 N (to the extent of 4-8% nitrogen by weight), a minor proportion of iron oxide and possibly metallic iron. Specified promoters are oxides of K, Ca, Al, Be, Mg, La, Mo and Si.

[Also in Division C5] A solid catalyst comprising H 3 PO 4 on a SiO 2 - containing carrier is made by (a) heating a mixture containing SiO 2 and at least 60% by weight of H 3 PO 4 at 650-1000‹C to obtain a composition in which the molar ratio P 2 O 5 :SiO 2 is less than 1:1 and then (b) activating the composition by contacting it with steam at 100- 300‹C. The SiO 2 source is preferably diatomaceous earth containing less than 6% Na 2 O, K 2 O, CaO, MgO and Fe 2 O 3 . Al 2 (SiO 3 ) 3 may be used instead but is less desirable.

[Also in Division C5] A catalyst for the preparation of isoprene by the gaseous phase decomposition of 4, 4- dimethyl m dioxane is prepared by suspending a silicic acid filter of specific surface 30- 200 m 2 /g together with a kaolinite montmorillonite or atupulgite clay in an aqueous stable silicic acid sol (specific area 150-400 m 2 g); adding to the suspension on any suspension of MgO to set the suspension into beads; drying and heating the beads to 500-1000‹C for at least 10 minutes; adding thereto 5-30% phosphoric acid and further heating to 300- 650‹C.

Hydrogen is prepared by passing a mixture comprising carbon monoxide and steam at a temperature of 400-725‹ F. over a catalyst comprising a caesium salt of an acid having an ionization constant below 1 Î 10 -3 deposited on a support having a high surface area. Hydrogen sulphide may be present as an impurity in the gas stream. Suitable caesium salts are the carbonate, bicarbonate, biphosphate, aluminate, hydroxide, acetate and tungstate, and suitable supports are activated carbon, activated alumina, silica-alumina and zeolites. The initial gas mixture may be made by catalytically steam-reforming hydrocarbons, e.g. natural gas, or by reacting coal, coke, or heavy feedstock with steam, with or without H 2 .

    Abstract: Isomerization, alkylation and other hydrocarbon conversion processes are effected in the presence of RSbF6 on a particulate solid carrier (where R = hydrogen, alkyl or cycloalkyl). Preferably the feed contains C2-12 hydrocarbons e.g. n-pentane, n-hexane, methylpentanes, n-heptane, and methylhexanes, and is free from unsaturated compounds, benzene, water and sulphur. Examples described the preparation of C6H11SbF6 and its use to isomerize n-pentane to iso-pentane. Isobutene which remains unchange at the end of the reaction, may be used as an isomerization medium.ALSO:Compounds of formula RSbF6 are made by bringing HSbF6 into contact with a suitable hydrocarbon at room temperature. [R=alkyl or cycloalkyl]. Particularly suitable hydrocarbons are saturated cyclic hydrocarbons (naphthenes), e.g. cyclopentane, cyclohexane, and/or methylcyclohexane. Examples describe the preparation of methyl cyclopentenyl hexafluorantimonate.ALSO:HsbF6 on RSbF6 (where R = alkyl or cycloalkyl) is supported on a solid inert carrier e.g. metals, alloys, refractory oxides, salts on polymers. Specified carriers are Pt, Al, Pt-Au, Ni-Mo, Ni-W, Al-Mg, polyethylene, polytrifluorochloroethylene, P.T.F.E., copolymeric P.T.F.E. and hexafluoropropylene, SbF3 and AlF3 if desired coated on Al2O3, SiO2, SiO2-Al2O3, SiO2-MgO and combinations thereof with Cr2O3, BrO3 and ZrO2. Naturally occurring materials specified are bauxite, Kaolin and diatomaceous earth. The catalyst may have a surface area of 200 sq.m/gm.
