    Abstract: A method of making a composite anionic exchange conducting layer comprising the steps (a) providing an anionic conducting polymer comprising tertiary amine groups; (b) providing a crosslinking agent; (c) providing a porous substrate; (d) creating a solution of the anionic conducting polymer and crosslinking agent; (e) coating the substrate with the polymer solution; (f) crosslinking the polymer solution; and (g) exposing the coated support material to trimethylamine solution to functionalize the tertiary amine groups to quaternary ammonium. Also shown is an electrochemical compressor utilizes an anion conducting layer disposed between an anode and a cathode for transporting a working fluid. The compressor may be part of a refrigeration system that pumps the working fluid in a closed loop through a condenser and an evaporator.

    Abstract: An anion exchange synthetic resin is produced by heating dicyandiamide with an aldehyde and an acid or alkaline catalyst until a gel is formed, which is dried, the gel while still wet and/or during and/or after drying being heated to a temperature between 105 DEG and 125 DEG C. to convert it to the infusible form without destroying its porous gel structure and to bring its solubility between 1.0 and 2.0. Solubility is measured by shaking the resin with sulphuric acid, filtering, oxidizing the filtrate with standard potassium permanganate solution and titrating the unused potassium permanganate with sodium thiosulphate. It is expressed in arbitrary units defined in the Specification. In an example, 1 mol. of dicyandiamide was heated for 2 1/2 hours on a water bath with 2 1/2 mols. of formaldehyde as 40 per cent formalin in presence of .1 mol. of hydrochloric acid. The gel dried at 100 DEG C. for 6 hours yielded a hard glass-like resin which was heated to 110 DEG C. for 8 hours and ground to pass a 40-mesh sieve. After activation with sodium carbonate solution and washing, it had an exchange capacity expressed as 6.1 kilograms of CaCO3 per cubic foot of resin. A similar example is described in which an alkaline catalyst (sodium carbonate) is employed as condensation catalyst.
