Abstract: A photovoltaic power circuit is provided and includes a plurality of strings of connected photovoltaic panels operable to generate DC current from solar radiation. Each of the strings is connected to a solar inverter by a pair of fuses. A detection circuit is provided that is operable to detect when one of the fuses opens as a result of a fault, regardless whether the fault is temporary or continuing.

Abstract: Systems and methods for fault detection and protection in electric power systems that evaluates electromagnetic transients caused by faults. A fault can be detected using sampled data from a first monitored point in the power system. Detection of fault transients and associated characteristics, including transient direction, can also be extracted through evaluation of sample data from other monitored points in the power system. A monitoring device can evaluate whether to trip a switching device in response to the detection of the fault and based on confirmation of an indication of detection of fault transients at the other monitored points of the power system. The determination of whether to trip or activate the switching device can also be based on other factors, including the timing of receipt of an indication of the detection of the fault transients and/or an evaluation of the characteristics of the detected transients.

Abstract: A voltage measuring device includes an input configured to be coupled to a secondary of an inductive coupling of a DC to DC voltage converter. A switch coupled to the input forms a discharge path parallel to a sampling capacitor dependent on the voltage at the input equaling or exceeding a first voltage threshold and independent of an output voltage at the output of the device. The sampling capacitor is coupled to the output. A rectifier in series with the sampling capacitor is biased to conduct upon the input voltage, minus the output voltage, equaling or exceeding a second voltage.

Abstract: A conveyor system includes a conveyor table having a platform surface with opposed platform edges that form a flow gap therebetween and a plurality of conveyor mechanisms extending above the platform surface. At least one guide pin assembly is receivable in the flow gap. The guide pin assembly includes a guide pin having at least a portion thereof above the platform surface. A carrier for a workpiece includes a base, a column extending vertically from the base, and a lifting assembly carried by the column that is movable with respect to the column and adapted to carry a workpiece. The carrier may be detachably secured to the guide pin assembly so as to allow controlled movement of the workpiece along the platform surface.

Abstract: A decision support system is provided for utility operations to assist with crew dispatch and restoration activities following the occurrence of a disturbance in a multiphase power distribution network, by providing a real-time visualization of possible location(s). The system covers faults that occur on fuse-protected laterals. The system uses real-time data from intelligent electronics devices coupled with other data sources such as static feeder maps to provide a complete picture of the disturbance event, guiding the utility crew to the most probable location(s). This information is provided in real-time, reducing restoration time and avoiding more costly and laborious fault location finding practices.

Abstract: A method is described for using the partial least squares (PLS) technique for modeling, predicting and controlling curl and twist in a paper machine. The prediction variables to the model are selected quality control system measurements and paper machine variables. The selection is based on incremental error analysis of individual prediction variables and can be improved using score contribution analysis. The predicted variables to the model are the curl and twist measurements which are determined from the samples taken at the end of the reel. The PLS model is identified and used in an on-line framework and the model is continuously updated with new data as required. A control strategy to use the PLS model for controlling curl and twist is included. There is also described a method which uses as inputs to the model only the measurements from a fiber orientation sensor and the curl and twist measurements.

Abstract: An apparatus and method to use steam to atomize water to produce a mixture of moisture and heat for application to the web of a paper machine for both production improvement and paper quality control. The method allows independent droplet size and heat control in the mixture, resulting in flexibility that can not be offered by conventional steam showers or water spray systems individually. In one embodiment the apparatus consists of a plurality of actuator nozzle modules which control the water volume flow feeding the nozzle through a pneumatic pressure signal. Pressurized steam feeding the nozzle is used to break the water into fine droplets. The resulting nozzle spray is a mixture of moisture in fine water droplets and steam vapor, and heat stored in the steam. Alternatively, a plurality of steam valves can be used to regulate the steam volume flow feeding each atomizing nozzle.
