    Abstract: A satellite radiodetermination system comprises global navigation service (GNSS) satellites 2 such as GPS satellites, which generate GNSS ranging signals Rn, geostationary satellites 6 which retransmit ranging signals Rg generated at a navigation land earth station (NLES) 8, including augmentation data A, and medium earth orbit (MEO) satellites 10 which generate ranging signals Rm including regional augmentation data RA transmitted from a satellite access node (SAN) 14. The regional augmentation data RA is supplied by regional augmentation systems 21a, 21b. A navigation receiver 11 receives the ranging signals Rg, Rm, Rn and calculates ionospheric delay values for those ranging signals which are provided on dual frequencies. Using these ionospheric delay values, and optionally the regional augmentation data RA and the augmentation data A, the navigation receiver estimates ionospheric delay values for those ranging signals which are provided on single frequencies. The navigation receiver uses the ranging signals, corrected for ionospheric delay and errors indicated by the augmentation data A and regional augmentation data RA, to calculate position and time accurately.

    Abstract: In a radio communications system in which data is transmitted on a modulated radio frequency carrier, the carrier is switched off when no data is available for transmission. If repeated signalling information is required to be transmitted, only a predetermined number of repeats are transmitted before the carrier is switched off. In one embodiment a bit sequence at the end of a first data block is compared with multiple sequences from a second block and if all sequences are equal, transmission of the second block is inhibited. In another embodiment data input for transmission is compared with a predetermined bit sequence. If a match is found for any relative bit alignment, this indicates an idle state (absence of user data) and the carrier is switched off. When more user data is received the carrier is switched on and frames are transmitted in synchronisation with the timing of frames transmitted before carrier deactivation. After carrier reactivation a constant power preamble may be transmitted to assist in level control in the transmitter. In a satellite SCPC system satellite power efficiency is improved and mobile earth station battery power is saved.

DEC K which refine the probabilities of the coded bits derived from the soft demodulators DEM 1 . . . DEM K , by taking into account the knowledge of the code, and output to soft modulators M 1 . . . M K . For each iteration of the MUD receiver algorithm, an acquisition function ACQ acquires the timing of the estimates of each user's contribution to the channel for use by the detector DET in the next iteration, giving improved acquisition performance over conventional single-user techniques.
