Metal-heating furnaces; crucible and muffle furnaces.-In gas-fired oven, muffle, crucible, tank, and like furnaces of the kind described in Specification 27,686/12, air for combustion is supplied under pressure through conduits passing below the floor of the heating-chamber, and gas is supplied through separate passages into the air conduits near their delivery ends, the combustion products being led through passages also extending beneath the floor and serving to heat the air. In the furnace shown in Fig. 2, air is supplied under pressure from a conduit i, arranged at the top of the furnace, or at the side, as shown in dotted lines, to passages g passing centrally through the outlet flue passages h leading to the chimney n. Gas is supplied from a pipe k through valve-controlled branches m into the air conduits g near their delivery ends, the gas passages being enlarged at l to facilitate mixing of the air and gas before entering the heating-chamber d. Roller mills.-Relates to roller mills in which a lever for operating an eccentric shaft for separating the rolls is held in the working position or in a preliminary position by catch teeth, and consists in making one or both of the catch teeth adjustable. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, the teeth k, l of the pivoted catch i engage a pin m on a lever a which is connected to the lever on the eccentric shaft by an adjusting-screw. The teeth are adjustably fixed in a slot in the catch by screws and nuts n. In another arrangement in which the whole catch i is adjusted, the catch is attached to the mill casing b by an eccentric pin which is adjusted by means of a lever and set-screw, the adjusting- screw connecting the lever a with the lever on the eccentric roll shaft being replaced by a link. In the modification shown in Fig. 5, the catch i is pivoted on an adjustable block r and engages directly with a pin on the lever e on the eccentric roll shaft f. Multiple-acting piston pumps. - The improved valve box for a four-cylinder pump, shown in Fig. 1, consists of a box 5, with openings 6 for connexion to the cylinders. The box is divided vertically by two partitions 9 into three chambers, the two end chambers being further divided by vertical partitions 11, and the central chamber by an horizontal partition 10. The suction pipe is connected to the upper opening 12, and the delivery pipe to the lower opening. Flap valves 14 are provided for all the chambers, opening in the proper direction for suction and delivery. Any sediment in the water is thus deposited in the valve casing rather than the pump cylinders.

By moving the block f up or down, the lever a is moved for a coarse adjustment, and then by adjusting the screw d in the boss or nut c of the lever a fine adjustment is obtained. A catch or clamping-screw i is provided for securing the block f in the desired position, and the adjusting-screw d may be provided with a lock-nut e.

Gas burners.-The air supply to an atmospheric burner for gas fires, gas cooking-apparatus, and the like, which is adapted to use coalgas, water-gas, or other gas, is regulated by means of two slides operated through levers by means of a push-and-pull device. In the burner shown in the Figure, which is a view from beneath of a burner for a gas fire, the slides d are placed over openings made in the underside of the induction tube a, and are supported on the outside by means of a rib f on the burner, and on the inside by means of a rod c. The levers g are operated by a piece i, which is provided at the front with a turned-up end adapted to serve as a handle. A screwed rod k serves to support the handle j and is provided with a nut m, which acts as a stop to limit the motion of the slides. By altering the position of the nut m, the amount of opening may be adjusted for different kinds of gas, or the rod k may be provided with a fixed stop. To light the burner, the slides are first brought together as shown so as to close the air inlets, and the gas is ignited at the nipples o. The sleeves are then opened and air is admitted, so that lighting-back is prevented.
