Abstract: Optical encoding of a cuvette or other object is provided by means of multiple facets molded integrally into flanges or other portions of the object, which facets selectively refract light passing therethrough in accordance with a predetermined code. The detector for the coded light includes a separate detector for each code state of the facets, with the detector having a different output when no facets are between a light source and the detectors. The facets are preferably bevels, which are selectively angled in accordance with the code.

Abstract: 1492432 Pipette MEDICAL LABORA TORY AUTOMATION Inc 6 Feb 1975 [12 Feb 1974] 5193/75 Heading B1X A pipette comprises first and second chambers 54 and 57, the second chamber communicating with the first through a normally closed valve 50, a first piston 14 reciprocally movable within the first chamber 54 to aspirate liquid into a reservoir forming part of the pipette or formed within a separate tip attached to the pipette, and a second piston 14 movable within the second chamber 57 to expel air therefrom through the valve and into the first chamber to expel liquid from the reservoir, the valve being arranged to open in response to the movement of the second piston. In operation of one embodiment, knob 15 is depressed driving piston 14 into chamber 54 to displace a predetermined volume of air. Release of pressure on knob 15 enables springs 22 and 23 to move piston 14 to the right (as shown in Figure) and aspirate liquid into the pipette tip (not shown). The interior of the pipette to the right of disk 30 will contain air at atmospheric pressure. Liquid is discharged by pressure on knob 15 and during the leftward movement of piston 41, the pressure in chamber 57 overcomes spring 53 and opens check valve 50, allowing the compressed air in chamber 57 to expand into chamber 54 and expel the liquid from the pipette tip.

Abstract: A mechanical pipette having a fixed stroke for aspirating and discharging a predetermined volume of liquid into and from a reservoir. A measuring piston controls the volume of liquid drawn into the reservoir and a substantially larger piston assures that all of the liquid in the reservoir is expelled therefrom on a discharge stroke. On the discharge stroke, a mechanically actuated valve is opened to admit air being compressed by the substantially larger piston into the reservoir.

The first, top part comprises a plurality of vertical receptacles for receiving the test tubes in a close fitting relationship. The second, bottom part is a rack that is interconnected to the top part in an easily detachable manner, and it comprises a base plate and vertical corner posts so that it is possible to look through all four sides of the bottom part of the stand and observe the contents of the test tubes.

Abstract: A feeder system (10) for sequentially supplying a plurality of cuvettes (30) or other objects to a conveyor track (18). The system includes a cassette (24), an escapement (15), and an actuator (198). The cassette retains the objects/cuvettes in at least one substantially vertical stack over the conveyor. The escapement (198) is movable between a first position in which the escapement supports the bottom object in the stack, a second middle position in which the escapement supports both the bottom object and the object above it and a third position in which the escapement continues to support the object in said stack above the bottom object and releases the bottom object to be deposited on the conveyor. The actuator moves the escapement between the first, second and third positions. Novel apparatus for use in the system, including a stick (86) for loading cuvettes into a cassette and a cuvette particularly adapted for stacking, are also provided.
