Abstract:
A method and apparatus for conducting a multimedia telephone call. The apparatus carries out the method by establishing a telephone call between first and second customer premises equipment and generating, at the first customer premises equipment, a frequency shift keyed message containing a network resource locator. The FSK message is then transmitted from the first customer premises equipment to the second customer premises equipment during the telephone call and is received at the second customer premises equipment.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for obtaining subscriber services available from a service provider, in a telephone in communication with the service provider. The method includes the step of receiving a subscriber services message at the telephone, where the subscriber services message includes a feature identifier for identifying at least one of a plurality of features available in the telephone and a feature controller for controlling whether or not the feature is to be enabled at the telephone. The method further includes the steps of displaying at the telephone a display message including an indication of features enabled at the telephone and transmitting to the service provider a feature request code associated with an enabled feature selected by a user of the telephone, the subscriber services request identifying to the service provider a request for the enabled feature selected by the user. The enabled feature is then provided to the telephone by the central office.
Abstract:
A software product is modified so that it can be freely distributed while limiting its use to authorized subscribers (14). The modification (20) includes replacing calls to relocatable subroutines in the software product by calls to redirection software, which is added to the software product together with authorizing software. A table of information on the replaced calls is supplied securely to an authorization agent (12), with which the authorizing software communicates on execution of the modified software product. An authorized subscriber supplies local data specific to its environment to the authorization agent, which encodes the table in dependence upon the local data and the authorizing software and supplies it to the autorized subscriber. Tampering with the authorizing software, or different local data of others, prevents use of the table. The redirection software decodes a target address for each replaced call during execution of the software, without decoding of the table or restoring the software to its original form. Alternatively, the redirection software can be supplied to the authorized subscriber by the authorization agent.
Abstract:
Coverage in a cellular communications system is provided by a plurality of relays (R) within range of a base station (200). Each relay defines a service area which can overlap that of a neighbouring relay to serve subscribers. An antenna arrangement at the base station forms directional beams (230, 240) and can vary the radiation pattern of its directional beams to selectively illuminate relays as required. An individual relay may be illuminated by a narrow beam at a particular frequency, or a group of relays may be illuminated at a common frequency in a simulcast fashion. This allows the system to adapt to changing traffic conditions.
Abstract:
The present invention provides an IP telephony gateway. According to a first aspect of the invention, the gateway provides communications between a switched circuit network (SCN) and an IP network. The gateway can handle calls between clients on the switched circuit network and IP clients on the IP network. The gateway provides supplementary call services/features for calls to/from IP clients on the IP network, thus providing IP clients with similar features to those that are available to terminals on a PBX. The gateway is preferably a PBX which supports the supplementary services/features. Advantageously, the gateway can also provide supplementary call services/features to calls between IP clients on the IP network. This can be achieved by routing call control signaling for IP client - IP client calls via the gateway where the services can be controlled. A further aspect of the invention provides an IP network in which IP clients have access to a range of supplementary call features/services. At least one of the supplementary features/services is provided by a gateway, such as a PBX, at an interface to the IP network. A call from an lP client is routed via the gateway to apply the supplementary feature/service.
Abstract:
Methods are provided which employ call redirection to provide services such as personal mobility, terminal mobility and call distribution in a packet-based network such as the Internet, or an intranet.
Abstract:
In an adaptation layer switching network, functional partitioning is provided by providing a separation between service specific sublayers (SSCS), common part sublayers (CPS) and transport convergence. This enables the support of a range of SSCS functions via a common set of CPS blocks.
Abstract:
An acoustic wave transducer device comprising a material which produces a voltage signal dependent on the shape of the material and on the pressure applied to the material by an acoustic wave, wherein said material is of an irregular shape.
Abstract:
An add/drop multiplexer/demultiplexer (ADM) for switching, modulating and attenuating optical signals in a fiber optic network employing WDM. The ADM has an optical multiplexer for splitting an input WDM signal into individual optical signals, leading to respective 2x2 switches. Each switch has another input originating from a plurality of "add lines". The input signals are tapped, optoelectronically converted and fed to a controller, which reads switching, modulation and attenuation instructions. The instructions can be encoded into a low-frequency dither signal that is embedded within the input optical signals. The ADM can accordingly be instructed to re-route traffic, dynamically equalize optical channel power levels, and add or remove dither, all in real time. A bi-directional ADM can be constructed from two unidirectional ADMs. Also, a single, general multi-input multi-output switch can be used to provide an arbitrary mapping between individual input and output optical signals.
Abstract:
A method and system for updating a software subsystem while services are being provided by the software subsystem is provided. Initially, instructions are processed from a primary software subsystem loaded at a first base address associated with a primary storage unit. A secondary software subsystem is downloaded at a second base address associated with a secondary storage unit while the primary software subsystem is being executed. The secondary software subsystem typically contains an updated version of the primary software subsystem. To install the updated software subsystem, the first base address associated with the primary storage unit is swapped with the second base address associated with the secondary storage unit. Execution continues using the updated software subsystem without a significant interruption in service.
