Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To minimize clash between a read/write head and a recordign medium, and thereby to improve the reliability of a disk drive by employing one mechanism for launching/retraction of the read/write head. SOLUTION: The mechanism includes a retract lever 81, a retract lever lock 118, a mechanical biasing member (spring 76 or the like), and a voice coil motor 16. After launching, the voice coil motor 16 is used to rotate the retract lever 91 to increase the potential energy of the biasing member. Then the retract lever lock 118 is used to store the built-up potential energy. On the occurrence of a power failure of the disk drive, the mechanism retracts the read/write heads 55, 58 automatically from the medium. The stored mechanical energy during the retract motion of the read/write heads 55, 58 acts on the retract lever 91 to allow the read/write heads 55, 58 automatically to be retracted from the medium.
Abstract:
A disc drive 22 having a head 26 actuated by an actuator 32 for seeking out a destination track 30 includes servo velocity control circuitry 51 and servo position control circuitry 41. The servo velocity control circuitry 51 seeks out the destination track and places the head within the boundaries of that track while the servo position control circuitry 41 using servo information places the head on the centerline of the destination track. The fine servo control circuitry 20 is provided for communicating the information generated by the servo position control circuitry 41 to the servo velocity circuitry 51 when the head 26 is several tracks from the destination track in order to allow the actuator 32 to smoothly and quickly cause the head to seek within the boundaries of the destination track without overshooting that track.
Abstract:
A removable cartridge having a housing and a recess 410 formed therein in which is located a tang 402 of a cartridge mounting mechanism. The cartridge mounting mechanism provides for positioning of a disk assembly located within the removable cartridge over a spindle motor for mounting thereto. By recessing the tang of the mounting mechanism, the overall height of the cartridge is reduced. The removable cartridge also includes a specially configured slot 430 for enhanced positioning of the removable cartridge relative to a disk drive.
Abstract:
A disc drive 22 having a head 28 actuated by an actuator 27 includes a head loading velocity control for successfully and accurately loading the head 28 onto a disc 26 so as not to cause damage to the head 28 or the disc 26.
Abstract:
A hard disk drive for receiving a removable cartridge having a recess formed in an exterior surface thereof, and an engaging surface of disk assembly mounting mechanism located in that recession. The drive possesses a handle 70 having a lever which extends into the recess to contact the engaging surface of the disk assembly mounting mechanism, whereby further movement of the handle causes the mounting mechanism to move in such a manner that a disk assembly within the removable cartridge is positioned over a spindle motor of the drive for mounting thereto. Other features such as position sensors and enhanced cartridge positioning mechanisms are also provided.

Abstract:
A removable cartridge disk drive (100) that receives cartridges at an angle relative to the base of the drive. The removable cartridge disk drive ejects cartridges (101) at an angle relative to the base of the drive such that the cartridge opens the disk drive door (286). The removable cartridge may contain multiple disks and is further configured to conform to a 3.5 inch form factor while the corresponding disk drive has a drive height of 1 inch or less. The removable cartridge disk drive also has a bent wire (246) mounted to a suspension on the actuator (110) that engages a head load/unload ramp while a head is over the disk, thereby permitting the disk drive to utilize a stationary head load/unload ramp. The disk drive further has a Burst In Range mode that ignores servo errors unless the servo error occurred during a target data sector and unless the servo error is a certain type of servo error. A history of recent error conditions is maintained. The Special Data Sector mode identifies the exact data sector during which a servo error was detected. The removable cartridge used by the disk drive has an anti-rattle feature.
