Abstract:
A method and apparatus are described including multicasting a medium reservation message, receiving responses to the medium reservation message and determining if a ratio of the received responses to an expected number of responses exceeds a threshold. Also described are a method and apparatus including receiving a medium reservation message, determining if the medium reservation message specifies this receiver in a list of receivers from which a response is requested, determining if a medium is idle and transmitting the response to the medium reservation message responsive to the second determination.
Abstract:
A multimedia-on-demand peer-to-peer device acting as a receiving peer includes a local cache memory device adapted to store a multimedia prefix. Local storage of the multimedia prefix allows rapid commencement of playback of the requested multimedia program without substantially loading the streaming capacity of an associated server device. The storage of multimedia prefixes in local cache memory of the receiving peer device can take place during periods of relatively low network loading so as to optimize network and server scheduling. Included is a method and apparatus for performing admission control in a peer-to-peer multimedia-on-demand system. The admission control system determines if there is sufficient system capacity to support a new request from a peer-to-peer device acting as a client in light of the presence of stored multimedia prefixes at the peer-to-peer device acting as a receiving peer device, among other factors.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for performing admission control in a peer-to-peer video-on-demand system are described including determining if there is sufficient bandwidth to support leading sub-clip streaming for a new request from a video playback device, determining if there is sufficient bandwidth to admit the request without sacrificing quality of service for existing requests, accepting admission of the new request if both determining acts are positive and rejecting admission of the new request if either of the determining acts are negative. Also described is an apparatus for providing content to a video playback device in a peer-to-peer video-on-demand system including an admission control unit and a data engine component.
Abstract:
A method and system for eliminating redundant connections, including transmitting a request to merge two connections, terminating a first portion of a first connection, terminating a first portion of a second connection, and merging a second portion of each of the first and second connections, are described. A method and system for merging connections, including receiving a request to merge two connections, terminating a first portion of a first connection, terminating a first portion of a second connection, and merging a second portion of each of the first and second connections.
Abstract:
A method for selecting a route by a node between a source node and a destination node in a wireless mesh network by establishing the route between the source node and the destination node using media access control addresses is described. A method for a node to selecting a route to join a multicast group in a wireless mesh network using media access control addresses, is also described.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to portable video decoder devices that are used by sporting enthusiasts to monitor and access real time information concerning a sporting event. The present invention comprises a receiver which includes a touch screen display, keypad, audio and other media input and output ports which allows the user to monitor the statistics of a live sporting event and further access up to date information related to the event. A transmitter scheme is also disclosed for transmitting a plurality of media feeds related to an event where such media feeds are derived from source media feeds.
Abstract:
An access arrangement (11) provides secure access by at least one mobile communications device (121–123) by first authenticating the device itself, and thereafter authenticating the traffic therefrom. To authenticate the traffic from the mobile communications device, an authentication server (24) associated with the access arrangement (11) establishes a Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) encryption key for both the access arrangement and the mobile communications device. The authentication server provides the WEP encryption key to the device in connection with a command to cause the device to execute a resident ActiveX control to encrypt traffic with the WEP encryption key. Utilizing the Active X control within the mobile communications device to encrypt traffic with the WEP encryption key provides a simple, easy-to-implement method to achieve secure access.
Abstract:
A key synchronization mechanism for wireless LANs is provided where the access point (AP) does not start using a new encryption key until the first data frame correctly encrypted with the new key is received from the station (STA). The new key is used from this point on, until the expiration of a key refresh interval.
Abstract:
Within a radio access network (111, 112) an access point (181, 182, 183 and 184) selects a channel by first randomly choosing a channel from those available for use. The Access Point then monitors the channel for a random interval to determine if the channel is presently carrying traffic. The Access Point will select the channel unless the channel is in use by another AP. If so, then the AP will select another channel and commence monitoring for a random interval in order to determine whether the channel is available. The AP will continue to choose channels until a suitable channel is found, or all available channels have been exhausted.
Abstract:
A home network system that personalizes the selection of information content in accordance with an interest of a user of the network is disclosed. More specifically, a method and apparatus are described for automatically presenting an information content of interest to the user, being provided by an Internet site external to the network. The contents of interest may be determined in accordance with an access pattern of the user or a frequency of the use of particular topic in the content.
