Abstract:
A surgical retractor device holds back underlying tissue from a tissue wall when suturing through the tissue wall with a suture passer. The retractor device comprises a barrier material having an upper barrier surface for spanning between the tissue wall and the underlying tissue and which is resistant to being punctured by the suture passer. The barrier material is operable between a working position in which the upper barrier surface occupies a first prescribed area and can be positioned between the tissue wall and the underlying tissue, and a collapsed position in which the barrier material is manipulated relative to the working position such that the upper barrier surface occupies a second prescribed area that is less than the first prescribed area such that the barrier material can pass through an incision in the tissue wall.
Abstract:
An energy exchanger is provided. The exchanger includes a housing having a front and a back. A plurality of panels forming desiccant channels extend from the front to the back of the housing. Air channels are formed between adjacent panels. The air channels are configured to direct an air stream in a direction from the front of the housing to the back of the housing. A desiccant inlet is provided in flow communication with the desiccant channels. A desiccant outlet is provided in flow communication with the desiccant channels. The desiccant channels are configured to channel desiccant from the desiccant inlet to the desiccant outlet in at least one of a counter-flow or cross-flow direction with respect to the direction of the air stream.
Abstract:
Antennas suitable for use in compact radio frequency (RF) applications and devices, and methods of fabrication thereof. Described are resonator antennas, for example dielectric resonator antennas fabricated using polymer-based materials, such as those commonly used in lithographic fabrication of integrated circuits and microsystems. Accordingly, lithographic fabrication techniques can be employed in fabrication. The antennas have metal inclusions embedded in the resonator body which can be configured to control electromagnetic field patterns, which serves to enhance the effective permittivity of the resonator body, while creating an anisotropic material with different effective permittivity and polarizations in different orientations.
Abstract:
Nucleic acid molecules encoding polypeptides having polyketide synthase activity have been identified and characterized. Expression or over-expression of the nucleic acids alters levels of cannabinoid compounds in organisms. The polypeptides may be used in vivo or in vitro to produce cannabinoid compounds.
Abstract:
The present disclosure provides compositions comprising novel endophytes capable of promoting germination endophytes that have a symbiotic relationship with plants. The present disclosure further provides methods of improving seed vitality, biotic and abiotic stress resistance, plant health and yield under both stressed and unstressed environmental conditions, comprising inoculating a seed with the novel endophyte strains and cultivating a plant therefrom.
Abstract:
The present application relates to topical formulations in the form of an oil-in-water emulsion comprising nifedipine and a photostabilizing effective amount of quercetin or a photostabilizing effective amount of a combination of quercetin and butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane (BMDBM). Such topical formulations may, for example, be used for the treatment of diseases, disorders or conditions that benefit from topical administration of nifedipine such as but not limited to Raynaud phenomenon, chilblains or wound healing.
Abstract:
The present applications relates to methods for the simultaneous leaching and extraction of precious metals. For example, the present application relates to methods of leaching and extracting gold and/or palladium from a substance comprising gold and/or palladium such as a gold- and/or palladium-containing ore in one step using a compound of Formula I:(I).
Abstract:
The present invention is directed to wheat plants having increased resistance to an imidazolinone herbicide. More particularly, the present invention includes wheat plants containing one or more IMI nucleic acids such as a Teal IMI cultivar. The nucleic acids are preferably located on or derived from different genomes. The present invention also includes seeds produced by these wheat plants and methods of controlling weeds in the vicinity of these wheat plants.
Abstract:
The disclosure relates to immunogenic and vaccine compositions comprising Streptococcus exotoxins and/or bacterial thermolysins from M4 protease family. Also provided are kits, methods and uses of said compositions for treating or preventing laminitis in a hooved animal.
Abstract:
This application describes a state deviation technique for identifying transient instabilities in power systems. Such instabilities may result from disturbances such as external faults and power swing conditions. Detection of transient instabilities is based on the direction of change of phase angle of a machine such as a generator at an equilibrium point. Method and apparatus as disclosed may also be used for assessing system-wide transient stability of a power system or portion thereof.
