PURPOSE: A digital broadcasting transmitter and a stream processing method thereof are provided to insert a stuff byte into a MPEG-2 transport stream packet and replace the inserted stuff byte with known data. CONSTITUTION: An RS(Reed-Solomon) encoder(630) encodes a stream including known data. An interleaver(640) interleaves the encoded stream. A trellis encoder(650) performs trellis encoding of the interleaved stream. The trellis encoder resets internal memories in an initialization byte part included within the stream. If at least a part of the stream is changed by the reset of the internal memories, a RS parity generator(660) corrects parity corresponding to the changed part.

The tuner receives a signal transmitted from a digital transmitter. The demodulator performs VSB demodulation of a receiving signal modulated by a modulator. The equalizer cancels interference of a signal demodulated according to a trellis encoded symbol corresponding to base data by compensating channel distortion of the demodulated signal based on a multipath of a channel. A received signal includes the based data at a predetermined location of data. The base data is a specific sequence known between the digital transmitter and the digital broadcasting receiver.

A adaptor part(110) receives raw data and then generates a stream consisting of a plurality of packets, and prepares an adaptive field in some of the packets. In the meantime, so that additional data can be inserted into some of the packets, the adaptor part defines a packet having the new PID to generate a stream including the defined packet. A robust processing unit(207) includes an N/R(Normal/Robust) demultiplexer(207a), a robust encoder(207b), a robust interleaver(207c), and an N/R multiplexer(207e). The N/R demultiplexer(207a) separates a normal stream and a robust stream from a dual TS. The robust encoder(207b) adds the separated robust stream to a parity.
