Abstract: PURPOSE: A method for determining an initial angle of a rotor in a permanent magnet motor is provided to drive a motor with maximum torque and efficiency by detecting the initial angle of the rotor based on the rotation speed of the rotor. CONSTITUTION: A current rotation speed of a rotor is determined as the maximum speed after accelerating the rotor of a motor for a preset time(S206). The current rotation speed of the rotor is detected as the minimum speed after decelerating the rotor of the motor for the preset time(S214). The previously calculated speed difference is compared with the difference between the maximum speed and the minimum speed(S216). The position of the rotor of the motor is determined as the initial angle of the rotor when the difference between the maximum speed and the minimum speed is maximum(S222).
