    Abstract: A continuous high resolution fluid level monitoring system (300) is provided by embodiments of the present invention. This continuous high resolution fluid level monitoring system includes a unique fluid level sensor having a point light source (202), parabolic reflector (204), sensor array (308), and detection, processing and control system (310). The point light source illumines a parabolic reflector wherein the point light source is located at the focus of the parabolic reflector. The parabolic reflector reflects light from the point light source to produce a parallel light curtain (210). This parallel light curtain is parallel to an axis of symmetry of the parabolic reflector. The parallel light curtain illumines a chamber (302) such as a chamber in an ophthalmic surgical device used to contain surgical fluid (304). The sensor array coupled to the chamber detects the parallel light curtain illuminating the chamber. The sensor array provides an output to a detection/processing/control system in order to determine the fluid level within the chamber. This optical method of determining the surgical fluid levels may be advantageous in that it prevents physical contamination of the surgical fluids.

    Abstract: A method for operating a peristaltic pump (10) is provided. The peristaltic pump comprises a molded flow channel (26) contained on an elastomeric sheet (20) that is bonded or mechanically attached to a rigid substrate (22). The pump head rollers (16) are mounted radially from the axis of rotation (24) of the pump motor (12) and compress the clastomeric flow channels against the rigid substrate. During reflux, the pump head is positioned so that at least one of the rollers is parked in a position to compress the elastomeric flow channel at the input end of the peristaltic pump. Such an operation minimizes the amount of the elastomeric sheet that is exposed to high transient pressures.

    Abstract: An acoustic fluid level sensor is provided for use in a chamber, such as a chamber (12) contained in a surgical cassette (16) adapted to be placed in a surgical console (18). The sensor has an ultrasound transducer (14) mounted on the outside of the bottom (15) of the fluid chamber (12) and is acoustically coupled to the chamber by an acoustic coupling material (20). The transducer sends a pulse ultrasound signal (34) through the chamber and any liquid (30) in the chamber. A signal (36) is reflected back by the air/liquid interface (32) and captured by the transducer. The time required for the signal to travel to and from the transducer will vary with the amount of fluid in the chamber and is indicative of the level of fluid in the chamber.

    Abstract: During small incision surgery, and particularly during ophthalmic surgery, small probes are inserted into the operative site to cut, remove, or otherwise manipulate tissue. During these surgical procedures, fluid is typically infused into the eye using an infusion system, and the infusion fluid and tissue are aspirated from the surgical site using an aspiration system. The infusion and aspiration systems must be primed prior to surgery. Gas can become trapped within the infusion system and the aspiration system, which can cause certain problems. In prior systems, the system and method of priming the surgical cassette did not remove the trapped gas from the systems. Therefore, a need continues to exist for an improved system and method of priming a surgical cassette.
