[Also in Divisions H1, H2 and H5] The electrical breakdown or dielectric strength of a gas (e.g. perfluorovinyl sulphur pentafluoride) is measured in a "ball to plane cell" comprising a hollow plastics tube having gas tight seals at each end, the upper being connected to a high voltage source, and the lower to earth. Coaxial electrodes extend from the seals, the upper terminating in a steel sphere and the lower in a brass disc, and the upper is movable by a micrometer to set the electrode gap. A valve controlled gas inlet is provided in the bottom of the tube, and the electrodes connected to a 60 cycle A.C. high voltage (up to 20 KV) supply.

    Abstract: The invention comprises polymers of the compounds H2C=CR.COOCH(CF2Y)2, where R is H or CH3 and Y is F or Cl (see Division C2), and their production by heating the monomer, e.g. with a polymerization catalyst such as benzoyl, lauryl, acetyl or succinyl peroxide, azobutyronitrile or potassium persulphate, or by the use of actinic radiation. In the examples, polymerization is effected in bulk, and in aqueous emulsion using sodium lauryl sulphate; in the latter process, additional catalyst is added during polymerization.ALSO:The invention comprises the compounds H2C=CR.COOCH(CF2Y)2, where R is H or CH3 and Y is F or Cl, and their production by reacting HOCH(CF2Y)2 with acrylic or methacrylic acid, chloride, anhydride or methyl ester inert solvents and esterification catalysts may be used. The compounds can be polymerized (see Division C3).
