Abstract: Coatings and adhesives for brass, Cu, Zn, iron and steel consist of an ethylene copolymer contg. 0.5-30 wt.% bound ethylenically unsatd. carboxylic acid in bound form and 0.01-5 wt.% (on ethylene copolymer) of a hydroxyl gp.-contg. azo- or azomethine cpd. of formula HO-A-N=X-B-OH in which A and B = phenyl- or naphthyl residues and B may also be derived from pyrazole or quinolone-2, or of formula: (in which R1 and R2=H, Cl, Br, NO2, SO3H, COOH, NH2, NHR3 and R3 = alkyl, aryl or phenoxy residue). Pref. copolymer contains 60-90 wt.% ethylene, 0.5-20 wt.% acrylic acid and 0.5-20 wt.% tert. butyl acrylate. The compsns. which give good bond strength with no deterioration in water can be used for coating the metals e.g. by melt extrusion, powder sintering, etc., for bonding the metals to Al, plastics, textiles, rubber, glass, etc., and for the construction of sandwich panels useful in building, behicles, aircraft, containers, etc.

Abstract: 1424886 Spiropyrans for copying processes BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 20 June 1973 [21 June 1972] 29228/73 Heading C4P [Also in Division D2] Spiropyrans have the formula in which R 1 is H, alkyl, cyanoalkyl, carboxyalkyl, methoxyalkyl or cycloalkyl each of 1 - 6C, and phenyl, R 2 is alkyl of 1 - 4C, A is a benzene nucleus opt. subs. by Me, Cl, Br, or alkoxy of from 1 - 4C, and B is a benzene or naphthalene nucleus opt. substd. by Cl, Br, nitro, C 1-5 alkyl, C 1-5 , alkoxy, di-(C 1-5 )-alkylamino or C 1-5 -alkoxy-substituted carbonyl. Some ten compounds are described. They are prepared by condensing the heterocyclic bases with o-hydroxybenzaldehydes or o-hydroxynaphthaldehydes in a cyclization reaction. The spiropyrans formed may be dissolved in non-polar or weakly polar solvents, and give intense red to blue colorations when acid substances, including kaolin and similar materials. The spiropyrans may be used as dye-forming components, possibly encapsulated, for pressure-sensitive recording materials, particularly copying papers.
