Abstract: 1351785 Dinitroanilines BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 25 Aug 1971 [2 Sept 1970] 39785/71 Heading C2C Novel compounds of Formula I (in which one of R 1 and R 2 is NO 2 and the other is CH 3 , CF 3 or CH 3 SO 2 , R 3 is bromoethyl, alkylthioalkyl, azidoalkyl, acyloxyethyl or 2-acyloxypropyl, R 4 has the same meanings as R 3 and may also be H, alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl each having up to 4 carbon atoms, hydroxyethyl, 2- hydroxypropyl, alkoxyalkyl, cyanomethyl, cyanoethyl or chloroethyl, and R 3 may also be chloroethyl when R 4 is H) are prepared by reacting an appropriate dinitro-(chloro or bromo)- benzene with an appropriate amine, or with an amine substituted by a hydroxyethyl or hydroxypropyl group, followed by treating the product with a halogenating or acylating agent or an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal azide. Herbicidal compositions comprise a compound I together with a solid or liquid carrier, and optionally a fertilizer, pesticide or plant growth regulator.
