Abstract: The optical waveguide fibre comprises a core member, with a central region and an integral surrounding region. The central region has a higher refractive index than the surrounding regions. A clad member is disposed about and joined to the length of the core member along a segment of the periphery of the core member, thereby leaving a gap between them along the length of the optical waveguide fibre. The segment of the periphery of the core member along which the clad member and the core member are joined, is less than about 50% and more than about 0.1% of the periphery in axial cross section. The waveguide may be fabricated from a silica glass and configured to be single mode or multimode.

Abstract: A method is described for making a low reflectance optical fiber end termination. This comprises providing a region of uncoated glass optical fiber having a predetermined diameter and a first end, and heating the fiber at a location remote from the first end. The fiber is then pulled on opposite sides of the heated location to sever the end of the fiber, thereby leaving on the optical fiber a tapered end section. The end of said tapered section is further heated to lower the viscosity of the material thereof by an amount sufficient to cause the material to recede back along the fiber and form a rounded end thereon. An apparatus for carrying out this method is also described.

Abstract: Disclosed is a method of forming a doped glass article. Heated glass particles are deposited on a mandrel where they adhere together to form a porous glass preform having interconnective pores. The mandrel is removed to form a tubular preform having an axial aperture. The preform is suspended in a consolidation furnace by a gas conducting handle having a dopant containing chamber. As the handle and preform are heated, there is flowed through the chamber a gas that reacts with the heated dopant to form a reactant gas that flows into the aperture and into pores, whereby a dopant is incorporated into the porous glass preform. The doped preform is heat treated to consolidate it into an elongated non-porous glass body containing the dopant. The glass body can be provided with cladding glass and drawn into an optical fiber.

Abstract: A method is described in making a fiber optic coupler, in which there is first formed an intermediate produced composed of an elongated body of matrix glass, with a plurality of optical fibers extending through the midregion of the body, the fibers being fused together along with the midregion. The diameter of the central portion of the midregion and the diameters of the fibers in the central portion are smaller than the diameters thereof at the end regions of the body. First and second portions of uncollapsed longitudinal bore extend from the midregion into the end regions of the body, and respective funnels connect the first and second bore portions to the end surfaces of the body. At least one of the fibers extends through the first bore portion and the first funnel, and at least one other of the fibers extends through the second bore portion and second funnel. A hollow filament is inserted through the first funnel and into the first uncollapsed bore portion, and is evacuated, thereby evacuating the first uncollapsed bore portion. Glue is applied to the first funnel, the glue being drawn into the first uncollapsed bore portion due to its evacuated condition.

Abstract: A method is described of forming a tapered aperture at the end of a capillary tube bore (12). A gaseous etchant (22) such as a fluorine-containing compound flows through the bore (12) and emanates from the first end (14) of the tube (10). That tube end is heated to create a longitudinal temperature gradient. The gaseous etchant reacts with the tube (10) and enlarges that portion of the bore (12) at the first end. The resultant tapered aperture has a surface smoothness and shape that greatly facilitates the insertion of optical fibers during the fabrication of optical energy transfer devices.

Abstract: A method of making an optical fiber having an oblong core comprising the steps of depositing layers of core glass particles and cladding glass particles on an enlarged mandrel, removing the mandrel to form a tubular porous preform, consolidating the porous preform to form a dense glass preform, evacuating the central hole of the dense glass preform while stretching that preform to collapse the central hole thereof and form a flattened rod, applying additional cladding material to the rod, and drawing the resultant composite to form an optical fiber. To facilitate the flat collapse of the central hole of the consolidated, dense glass preform and to cause the core to have a large aspect ratio, the inside diameter-to-outside diameter ratio of the dense glass preform should be within the range of 0.3 to 0.9. For preferred core and cladding silica glasses, this ratio should be between 0.5 and 0.6. Also, the mandrel diameter should be at least 12 mm, and it is preferably between 25 mm and 50 mm.
