Abstract: A single-mode optical waveguide fiber designed to limit power penalty due to four wave mixing and a method of making the waveguide is disclosed. Variations in properties, e.g., radius or refractive index, of the waveguide fiber core provide a total dispersion which varies along the length of the waveguide. The algebraic sum of products of length times total dispersion is controlled to a pre-selected value for each waveguide fiber which makes up a system link. Proper choice of total dispersion variation magnitude and sub-length results in a system link wherein a signal travels only short distances in waveguide portions having total dispersion near zero. However, the variation of the total dispersion provides a system link which has a pre-selected dispersive effect on the signal over a selected wavelength range. The dispersive effect on the signal can be chosen to be essentially zero. A number of techniques for fabricating DM fiber are also disclosed.

Abstract: An interference filter (10, 30, 50, 70, 90, 110, 130, 150, or 190) filters selected wavelengths by dividing an input beam into two or more intermediate beams having different optical path lengths and by recombining the intermediate beams into an output beam that is modified by interference between the intermediate beams. An optical path length difference generator (20, 40, 60, 80, 100, 120, 140, 160, or 200) varies the optical path lengths of the intermediate beams by changing the physical lengths of their paths or the refractive indices of the mediums in which they are conveyed. The optical path length generator (20) of one exemplary embodiment (10) includes a spacer plate (20) that is divided into solid optical elements (22 and 24) having different refractive indices for varying the optical path lengths of the intermediate beams. Another optical path length difference generator (140) is formed by a stack of partially reflective surfaces (144) that are spaced apart in the direction of beam propagation by at least one nominal wavelength for varying the physical path lengths between the intermediate beams.

Abstract: Disclosed is a single mode optical waveguide fiber having periodic perturbations in the core to provide a birefringence which mixes the polarization modes of launched light. In addition, perturbations are introduced into the core which serve to manage total dispersion. The total dispersion of pre-selected segments of the waveguide are caused to change sign so that the sum of products, total dispersion times length, algebraically add to a pre-selected value. The two distinct core perturbation types serve to control both polarization mode dispersion and total dispersion. Methods for making the subject waveguide are also discussed.

Abstract: A method of manufacturing planar optical waveguides in which a planar optical preform which is stretched to form a planar optical cane with substantially smaller cross-sectional dimensions than the original preform, and in which the optical circuitry pattern is achieved by lithographic techniques. Optical fiber preforms may be inserted in slots in a substrate to form the planar optical preform.

Abstract: A spherical lens formed by fusing a generally homogenous glass lens blank to the distal end of an optical fiber, heating and tensioning the lens blank to separate it in two segments with the segment attached to the optical fiber defining a tapered end, and heating the lens blank above its softening point so that the spherical lens forms. The lens blank is fabricated from a 4 weight percent borosilicate glass having a softening point less than that of the core of the optical fiber. The lens member defines a throat region adjacent the optical fiber whose cross-sectional dimension is substantially greater than the diameter of the optical fiber, but substantially less than the diameter of the spherical lens.

Abstract: A transverse closed-loop fiber resonator ( 10 ) includes an inner cladding ( 102 ) having a surface ( 300 ) peripherally forming a closed-loop shape for confining light to the surface ( 300 ). The inner cladding has a first diameter thickness ( 104 ) and a first index of refraction profile in a cross-sectional portion of the transverse closed-loop fiber resonator ( 10 ). A ringed-core ( 120 ) corresponding to the closed-loop shape is disposed on the corresponding surface of the inner cladding ( 102 ). The ringed-core ( 120 ) has a second thickness ( 124 ) of material thinner than the first diameter thickness ( 104 ), and a second index of refraction profile greater than the first index of the inner cladding by an index delta in the cross-sectional portion of the transverse closed-loop fiber resonator such that the ringed-core can guide light within the ringed-core traversely around the closed-loop shape.

Abstract: A novel optical waveguide fiber having low total dispersion slope, relatively large mode field diameter, larger effective area, and a relatively simple core profile design is disclosed. The core refractive index profile comprises three segments (2,4,6). The adjustability of the height, width and location of the three core index profile segments, provides sufficient flexibility to meet a specification which calls for a dispersion shifted waveguide fiber capable of limiting four photon mixing or self phase modulation. The novel waveguide is characterized by a mode field diameter ≥ 7.5 microns and a total dispersion slope ≤ 0.070 ps/nm -km.

Abstract: Disclosed is a method of making a polarization retaining single-mode optical fiber. Longitudinal grooves are formed on opposite sides of a cylindrically-shaped core preform having a glass core surrounded by cladding glass. The core preform is inserted into a glass tube, the tube is shrunk onto the core preform, and the interface between the core preform and the tube is fused to form a solid preform having longitudinal apertures on opposite sides of the core. An etchant gas is flowed through the apertures to enlarge the apertures into holes having a substantially round cross-section. Inserted into each aperture is a stress rod formed of glass having a coefficient of expansion different from that of the cladding glass. The resultant draw blank is drawn to form a single-mode optical fiber having a core that is subjected to a stress-induced birefringence.
