    Abstract: Quaternary phosphonium compounds are obtained by reacting tris (hydroxymethyl)-phosphine with a methylol compound capable of forming a resin and, if desired, converting the resulting quaternary phosphonium hydroxide into a salt with an inorganic or organic acid, e.g., phosphonic, acetic, benzoic or picrolonic. Suitable methylol compounds include the reaction products of formaldehyde with phenol, cresols, urea, thiourea, ethylene-urea, dicyandiamide, benzene sulphonamide, p-toluene sulphonamide or melamine. The process of the invention may be effected by adding the methylol compounds to tris (hydroxymethyl)-phosphine dissolved in a solvent such as water or a lower-alkanol or, advantageously, in a molten state, and further heating to about 40 DEG C.-120 DEG C., e.g. 60 DEG C.-90 DEG C. The products are stated to be pesticides and flame-proofing agents, e.g. for textiles. Examples describe the preparation of tris-(hydroxymethyl) phosphonium derivatives from monomethylol-urea, dimethylol-urea, trimethylol-melamine, trimethylol-phenol, 2,5- dimethylol - p - cresol and N - methylol - p-toluene-sulphonamide.
