Abstract: A current access bubble memory system includes a method and device for propagating and switching isolated bubbles within a plurality of orthogonal propagation channels. The device includes two orthogonal arrays of parallel current conductors oriented at 45 DEG angles to the two orthogonal bubble translation axes. The conductors in each array are regularly spaced a distance S apart from center to center. The first array of conductors are connected in parallel to a first current source and the second array of conductors are connected in parallel to a second current source. The propagation channels are defined by confining means to have a width d where d is the bubble diameter. The centerline of the channels are spaced a distance of about 2ROOT 2 S/8 from the center of adjacent conductor intersections. Bubble translation occurs through sequential activation of the two bipolar current sources. Use of specific activation sequences allow selective control of the bubble propagation path at channel intersections. The method provides for flexible design of memory configurations with all accessing and switching functions controllable by means of specific activation sequences of the two current sources.

Abstract: SYSTEMS USING LATTICE ARRAYS OF INTERACTIVE ELEMENTS Apparatus is provided using as an integral portion thereof a confined array (such as a lattice) of interactive elements, the interactions among which are largely determinative of the positions of the interactive elements since there is a minimum of position determining structure for the elements within the area of confinement. Magnetic elements are suitable interactive elements, and in particular embodiments are shown using magnetic bubble domains. Means are provided to form lattice arrays of interactive elements, to confine the lattice arrays, and to access elements outside and within the lattice array. In addition, means is provided to code the interactive elements for storage of information, and reading means is provided to detect the information state of the interactive elements when these elements are coded. Various types of lattices and interactive elements can be used.

Abstract: A closed loop bubble lattice system and a method for stabilizing the same is disclosed. The closed loop bubble lattice system contains at least one portion being curved wherein the lattice parameter increases with the radius. In a preferred embodiment a radially varying bias field is associated with the curved portion in a manner to provide an equilibrium lattice constant at a bubble domain position which is substantially the same as the lattice parameter for that position. A method of reducing the stress in the curved portion of the bubble domain lattice system to provide stabilization therefor involves the step of varying one or more of the parameters which affect the equilibrium lattice constant.

Abstract: Stationary patterns of magnetic domains in a film layer of magnetically hard material define local field gradients for movement control of single-wall domains located in a contiguous sheet of magnetic "bubble" material. Suitable patterns of uniformly magnetized regions are established in the hard-magnetic film to provide the control pattern. A second garnet film of suitable composition, for instance, may be grown epitaxially on the bubble medium to provide the hard magnetic control film. Bubble domain confinement and propagation patterns are established in the hard-magnetic film by conventional recording methods or the desired pattern can be generated by projection or scanning the pattern with a light beam or an electron beam, or by thermomagnetic transfer from a master pattern.
