    Abstract: In order to prevent unintentional actuation of a mobile telephone function, one or more functions are disabled while it is detected that the telephone is in an inactive state. The disabled function may include the transmission of a call set-up signal, the receiving of data messages, or the replacement of an audible call announcement by a vibratory one. Some or all of the functions operated by the keypad may be disabled. In the embodiments described, the inactive state is detected when the telephone (1) is placed in a holder (2). Detection may be by a magnet (4) in the holder which switches a Hall effect device (3) on the telephone, by mechanical actuation of a switch, or by a light or infra-red actuated switching device.

    Abstract: A communication system comprising a plurality of mobile communication units that are operable to communicate with one another either directly or via an intermediary communicating unit, wherein the communication system includes a mobile communication unit capable of being configured as a primary communication unit for communications on a time divided communication resource with one or more secondary communication units, the communication system being characterised by one or more of the secondary communication units (300) being operable to transmit one or more beacon signals(440) during available time periods of the time divided communication resource whilst participating in a communication with one or more other mobile communication units, to inform other secondary communication units not participating in the call that the communication resource is being utilised. Advantageously the provision of beacon signals (440) in available time periods of the communication resource whilst a communication is on-going, ensures that hidden terminals outside of a coverage range of a master (primary) communication unit (300) do not attempt to access the communication resource and create signal collisions in so doing.

    Abstract: A wireless communication system includes at least one wireless base station 122 having a processor 208 coupled to a transmitter, encrypting network identification data 330 for transmission to a remote, mobile communication unit 112. The unit 112 includes a receiver for receiving encrypted network identification data 340, from at least one of the base stations 122 and a processor 360 to decrypt the encrypted network identification data 340 in order to determine whether or not that the serving base station is a valid one. In this manner, fraudulent wireless base stations or fraudulent networks may be detected more readily.

    Abstract: A method for use in a mobile communication system for estimating the location of a target mobile station (MS), N, which includes receiving signals from the target MS at a plurality of receivers 1, 2, 3 in different locations and calculating the location of the target MS from information obtained from the received signals, wherein at least one of the receivers is a searching MS 1 and wherein the calculation of location is carried out by the searching MS. The method may involve the target MS and the searching MS or MSs communicating by a direct mode of operation (DMO) link. The searching MSs may conveniently have GPS attachments 1a, 2a, 3a. A mobile station which may be used as the target MS or as a searching MS is also disclosed.

    Abstract: A communication unit (e.g. mobile radio) stores in its memory a first set of base stations and a second set of base stations (and their corresponding control channels). To establish a communication link (or re-establish a failed link) the unit sequentially attempts to establish contact with base stations from the first set. At preset time intervals these attempts are interrupted in order to attempt to contact base stations in the second set. If no link is established during this interruption the unit returns to making attempts to contact base stations from the first set. The first set may comprise all base stations in the communication system. The second set may include base stations most recently used, or the last used base station together with its nearest neighbours. In a preliminary step the communication unit may attempt to contact base stations in the second set prior to the above method. The sets may be prioritised in many ways, for example according to a signal quality measurement, history of usage or location. The timing of interruptions may depend on the priority of each base station. More than two sets may be used with different interrupt times.
