    Abstract: An apparatus (102, 104) for transmitting a stream of information bytes, the apparatus (102, 104) includes a mechanism (604, 618, 638) for receiving/transmitting a message specifying a radio link protocol, RLP, round-trip time, RTT, estimate, and a mechanism (604) for conducting an RLP communication session using said RTT estimate to determine negative acknowledgment, NAK, message timing. A first RLP RTT estimate can be established during service negotiation, and is used to determine NAK message timing in a subsequent RLP communication session. Alternatively, a 3-way handshake is performed for generating a first RTT estimate associated with the first RLP communication session, a second RTT estimate, based on the first RTT estimate, associated with a second RLP communication session is established during service negotiation. The second RLP RTT estimate is used to determine NAK message timing in a subsequent RLP communication session.

    Abstract: The present invention discloses a method and apparatus for a mobile station application to receive and transmit raw packetized data in a wireless communication system. The present invention includes a mobile station application that creates at least one socket. At least one of mobile station protocol layers of a communication protocol stack receives encapsulated raw packetized data from a communication network. The raw packetized data lacks destination port information. At least one of the mobile station protocol layers transmits unencapsulated raw packetized data to the created sockets. In turn, the created sockets transmit the raw packetized data to the mobile station application. In another implementation, the created sockets transmit raw packetized data of the mobile station application to at least one of the mobile station protocol layers. In turn, at least one of the mobile station protocol layers transmits encapsulated raw packetized data to the communication network.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for requesting PPP instances from a packet data services network includes a mobile station configured to send an origination message to a packet data service node (PDSN) at which it has arrived upon leaving the vicinity of another PDSN. The message informs the new PDSN of the new location of the mobile station and indicates both the number of dormant PPP instances associated with the mobile station and a service reference identifier for each such PPP instance. A flag within the message may be used to indicate whether the PPP instances are dormant (i.e., whether the mobile station is engaged in a call). Communications channel resources of packet data services nodes are optimized by reducing the information included in messages from the Packet Control Function network element to the Packet Data Service Node network element, and by reducing the use of Mobile Internet Protocol agent advertisement.

    Abstract: A method and system that detects protocol and configuration messages in a PPP packet without having to unframe the entire packet. The method includes a communication device (MT2) that receives a plurality data frames (S306), wherein the communication device is capable of ascertaining the beginning of an information portion (S305) within the received frames. The communications device detects whether the information portion contains configuration information, such as protocol and configuration messages of a predetermined type. In a first embodiment, the detection is achieved by the communication device unescaping (S315) the contents of a plurality of bytes and determining (S325, S330, S335) whether the escaped bytes contains the desired configuration information. In a second embodiment, the communication device determines whether the contents of a particular byte contain the desired configuration information, in escaped or unescaped form, and the communication device continues to sequentially process the bytes within the information portion until the bytes typically containing the desired configuration information are processed.

    Abstract: A method and a wireless communication device (MT2) (104) for simultaneously negotiating LCP or IPCP configuration options over both the Rm and the Um interfaces. When the MT2 device (104) receives either an LCP or an IPCP Configure-Request packet over one of the Rm or the Um interfaces, the MT2 device parses the requested configuration options (S310, S510) and determine s whether the requested options are supported (S320, S320) by the MT2 device. If the requested options are supported, the MT2 device saves a Configure-Reques t ID (S360, S560), included in the Configure-Request packet, and frames the Configure-Request packet in a PPP frame for transmission on the other of the Rm or the Um interfaces. If any of the requested configuration options are n ot supported by the MT2 device, the MT2 device creates a Configure-Reject packe t (S330, S530), including the unsupported options, and frames the Configure- Reject packet in a PPP frame for transmission over the interface through whi ch it received the Configure-Request packet.
