    Abstract: The power control process of the present invention enables a base station communicating over a forward packet channel to a mobile radio to control the power of the mobile radio transmitting over a reverse packet channel to the base station. The base station maintains a maximum energy per bit to total interference spectral density ratio threshold for the reverse channel as well as a desired threshold that results in a low frame error rate. By comparing each radiotelephone's estimated energy per bit to total interference spectral density ratio to the desired and maximum thresholds, power control commands to increase or decrease the radiotelephone's transmit power are generated depending on the outcome of the comparison.

    Abstract: A novel and improved method and apparatus for generating a constant data rate channel supporting signaling data transmission in an adjustable rate wireless communication system is described. In accordance with one aspect of the invention the rate at which the channel operates may be adjusted based on the particular use and environmental conditions such that the appropriate data rate up to a maximum capability can be achieved. User data is then placed into frames based on the selected rate. When available, signaling data is added into each frames in a predetermined amount. The resulting frame is encoded, repeated and punctured based on the selected rate and whether signaling data has been introduced, and transmitted via RF signals to the receive system. Upon reception, the frame is processed in accordance with having only user data and with having signaling data. That is, the frame is processed both as if it had signaling data and as if no signaling data were present. Once the frame is processed, the particular processing that is more likely to be correct is determined via error checking. If the signaling data processed frame is more likely to have be correct, the signaling data is separated from the user data and each processed accordingly. If the non-signaling data processing is determined to be more likely to be correct, the frame is processed as if it were entirely comprised of user data.

    Abstract: In a method for negotiating service configuration in a communication system having at least one dedicated channel which is not shared by communication devices in the communication system, a request message indicative of a proposed service configuration is generated in a service negotiator (20). The request message is multiplexed, in a multiplexer (22) coupled to the negotiator (20), with an information data signal to produce a multiplexed signal. The multiplexed signal is encoded in an encoder (24) interposed between the multiplexer (22) and a transmitter (26) in accordance with a service configuration selected by the service negotiator (20). The multiplexed and encoded signal is transmitted by the transmitter (26) over the dedicated channel. Received signals are decoded a decoder (16) interposed between a receiver (14) and a demultiplexer (18). A response message indicative of a response to the proposed service configuration is received by the receiver (14). A determination is made by the service negotiator (20) whether the response message is indicative of a mutually acceptable service configuration. The encoder (24) is directed by the service negotiator (20) to encode the information data signal in accordance with the proposed service configuration if the response message is indicative of an acceptable service configuration. The encoder (24) is directed by the service negotiator (20) to encode the information data signal with a universal default service configuration if the response message is not indicative of an acceptable service configuration.
