Abstract:
A service for Public Safety (PS) and Law Enforcement (LE) users on commercial wireless networks which assure them access to packet data services. The service request is application based. The applications that are for official use, by the PS/LE users, could have a reserved priority level associated with them. The reserved priority level could be higher than a normal commercial user. The network could use the priority to distinguish users, and dynamically allocate and optimize network resources. The network could use priority level information to perform access, admission, and congestion control. The PS/LE user could use the official applications while on duty and un-official ones while off duty, thus, additionally freeing up network resources. The PS/LE users could then use advanced commercial packet data services, without the need for a private network, while at the same time making it feasible for commercial networks.
Abstract:
Methods and apparatus to provide a virtual network interface. In an aspect, a method includes receiving a request to access content on a Non-IP network, wherein the request comprises an IP address and a quality of service (QoS) profile associated with the content, mapping the IP address and the QoS profile into a Non-IP network content identifier, and obtaining the content from the Non-IP network based on the Non-IP network content identifier. In an aspect, an apparatus includes an application interface configured to receive a request to access content on a Non-IP network, wherein the request comprises an IP address and a QoS profile associated with the content, mapping logic configured to map the IP address and the QoS profile into a Non-IP network content identifier, and processing logic configured to obtain the content from the Non-IP network based on the Non-IP network content identifier.

Abstract:
A system and method for providing group communication services. Each of a plurality of communication devices coverts information signals into data packets suitable for transmission over a data network, such as the Internet. The data packets are transmitted through the data network to a communications manager. The communications manager acts as a configurable switch, allowing communications from any communication device to be routed to the plurality of communication devices. The communications manager further allows users of other communication systems and devices to participate in group communications with each other.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for terminating a member from a group call in a group communication network provides for receiving an indication from a user who wishes to terminate participation in a group call and sending a request to a server to terminate the user from the group call. The method and apparatus further provides for the server to receive the request for terminating a user from a group call, terminate the user from the group call, and send a response indicating that the user is terminated from the group call.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for displaying identity information of a last speaker in a push-to-talk (PTT) system. A wireless communication device receives PTT communications and identification information of PTT speakers from a remote server. The wireless communication device displays the identification information of at least the last speaker while playing the PTT communication from a current speaker.

Abstract:
A method and apparatus for reducing latency in a group communication network (100) provides for a significant reduction in the actual total dormancy wakeup time and the PTT{XE"PTT"} latency by exchanging group call signaling even when mobiles (102, 102, 106) are dormant and no traffic channel is active. The method and apparatus provides for exchanging the group call signaling through the use of the short data burst (SDB) message signaling. The method and apparatus provides for re-establishing dedicated traffic channels for the talker mobile and the dormant listener mobiles advantageously in parallel.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for reducing transmission overhead in a wireless communication system. In one embodiment, the apparatus is directed to a communication device comprising a processor for transmitting a data origination message, the data origination message initiating a data communication with a receiving station. Information needed to construct datagrams are also transmitted by the apparatus to the receiving station. The receiving station receives the data origination message and the information needed to construct datagrams and configures a packet data generator for sending datagrams to a destination device. Data network header information is constructed from information provided by the information needed to construct datagrams.
Abstract:
An apparatus to form a group of communication devices over a distributed network is claimed. A first node establishes a first channel with a first communication device. At least one second node establishes at least one second channel with at least one second communication device. A controller electrically connected to the first node and the at least one second node comprises a database module. The database module comprises identification information of each of the communication devices of the group. The controller is dynamically configurable such that any single communication device of the group is capable of sending packet data through its respective channel to the other communication devices of the group.
