Class 9(2) An explosive or gas-generating composition comprises ammonium nitrate in a predominant amount and an effective amount of a combustion catalyst selected from the group consisting of iron-iron cyanide complexes, alkali metal-iron-iron cyanide complexes and ammonium-ironiron-cyanide complexes. Soluble Prussian blue is the preferred catalyst for combustion at normal pressure. Insoluble Prussian blue promotes more rapid combustion under pressure, as in military rockets or gasgenerating apparatus assisting take-off of aircraft; and compositions containing insoluble Prussian blue are less sensitive in normal storage. The composition may include oxidizable material such as aluminium, magnesium, urea, nitroguanidine, guanidine nitrate, mononitrate naphthalene, wood flour, cellulose acetate, paraffin wax, petrolatum, high-boiling hydrocarbon oil, tar, asphalt, bitumen, coal tar, shale oil residue, cellulose acetate, glycol diglycolate, or dinitrodiphenyl oxide. As a paste the composition may be pressed into moulds or extruded or it may be formed by a hot melt procedure.
