Abstract: 18,707. Thomas, J. Sept. 16. Doors.-The door frame for the fire-place of a domestic washing boiler or set-pot is made reversible, and the door is made double-faced, so that it may be arranged to open either from the left or from the right. The top and bottom sides of a rectangular or other frame a, Fig. 1, are prolonged to form extensions a , which may be connected by vertical webs, and which are preferably thicker at the back than at the front, so as to be more easily secured in the brickwork. The door, Fig. 2, is secured in the frame by means of pivot pins b engaging with holes a' formed in the top and bottom sides. A gap b , or an incline, is formed in the upper edge of the door, in order that when the upper pin has been inserted the door may ba raised for facilitating the insertion of the lower pin, a corresponding recess being provided in the brickwork. The door is kept closed by its own weight, and is provided with a handle on each face, and also with a hole b , which is stated to prevent cracking. The door abuts against an upright rabbet a , Fig. 1, or against inner ledges. By removing the door, turning the frame upside down, and re-inserting the door, it may be made to open from the opposite side. The Provisional Specification states that the pivot pins may engage with holes in lugs, which may be cast with or bolted to the frame, and that a fastening device may be used.

Abstract: 14,077. Thomas, J. June 22. Fog and audible signals ; lamp signals ; contacts, mechanical.-For the purpose of signalling during fogs, a lever is thrown over by passing trains, and, if signals are set against the train, a bell is the train, a bell is sounded. A lamp signal is fixed near the bell and connected with it to show when the signal is pulled off. Fig. 2 is a plan of the bell C on its carriage. The wires G, G', G from the signal cabin are attached to bars F, F , F carrying projections E, E , E which engage in slots D, D , D' in the carriage B, which runs on guides in the frame A and moves the bell C under the hammers V, X or away from them. The carriage B is attached by wires J to a lamp signal and to a counterweighted rod which holds it at the left-hand end of its run and under the hammers. The wires H, H , H are attached to the bars F, F , F and move the ordinary semaphore signals. The pulling-off of any of these signals pulls the bell clear of the hammers. It may be locked in this position, when not required for use, by inserting a pin N in a hole B in the carrier B. The train carries a plate which comes into contact with the lever R and moves it in the direction of the arrow. The lever R is loose on the shaft P, which it moves by means of the quadrant S . Projections on a fast lever W on the shaft P move the loose lever V , and, if a train is moving rapidly, the lever V strikes the gong C. In returning under the action of counterweights, the lever X, which is pivoted to the lever W, strikes the gong. This latter action occurs for fast or slow trains. A train moving in the reverse direction does not move the shaft P. Two or more levers R may be situated at intervals along the track and connected by wires so as to give a series of single or double strokes on the bell C. The lever R may be held clear of trains, when the bell signals are not required, by inserting a pin in the quadrant S'.

Abstract: 13,553. Thomas, J. June 17. Stopping way; drag anchors. - Drags, one of which is shown collapsed in Fig. 2, when thrown overboard and towed by the ropes e, f, assume the position shown in Fig. 1 and check the way of a vessel. The centre ring c is connected to the ring b by the flexible cone h and to the ring a by leaches d. Each drag is collapsed by hauling on the rope f.

Abstract: 10,358. Thomas, J., and Podmore, A. E. May 5. Incandescent gas lamps.-To increase the luminosity of the mantle a current of heated air and gas is supplied to its interior, and a current of heated air to its exterior. The mantle is surrounded by a chimney b, c, of the form shown, resting on a holder d having apertures e to admit air from a'tube g depending from a heating-chamber f, which also supplies hot air through a tube k to the mixing-chamber l. The gas supply pipe i may pass through the heating-chamber f and the tube k. The gas pipe and one or more air tubes may be coiled round the inside of the heating- chamber.

Abstract: 12,579. Thomas, J., and Podmore, A. E. June 20. Incandescent gas lamps.-Means are described for supplying heated air to the mixing-tube of the burner, and are particularly suitable for burners which are enclosed in globes or in street or other lanterns. In the street or like lamp shown in Fig. 2, the air supply enters the upper part of the lantern through inlets such as v, w, and, after being warmed in the chamber u formed between the reflector a and the top of the lantern, traverses a regenerator e arranged around the flue c and a tube g to the inlet end h of the bunsen burner k. The regenerator e may be connected to the burner inlet h by two tubes g arranged on opposite sides of the burner k, the bottom of the regenerator may be utilized as a reflector, and holes such as x may be provided for the passage of air to cool the glass.
