Abstract: The invention provides a materials treatment process and apparatus (10) which includes generating a high-enthalpy jet (12) of matter useful for the acceleration of abrasive particles (14) and accelerating the particles (14) by mixing the particles (14) with the high-enthalpy jet (12) and projecting (16) said particles (14) at a surface to be treated. The particles (14) are selected from sand, shot, wire, or metallic powder, depending on the desired purpose. The generating of the high-enthalpy jet (12) is by means of combusting in a combustion zone (18) of a combustion chamber (20) at least a portion of fuel component of a fuel containing feed stream (22) which is mixed with compressed air stream (24) prior to entering the combustion chamber (20).
