Abstract: A method of enhancing a joint in a metal assembly. At least two metal members are joined together. Each member has a joining surface that mates with the other joining surface. The metal members are contacted against one another such that the joining surfaces mate. The mated joining surfaces are welded together at multiple locations. The welding process leaves a small gap between the metal members between these welding locations. Heat is applied to the joining surfaces adjacent to the gap. A solder is applied to the heated joining surfaces. The joining surfaces cause the solder to melt and to be wicked into the gap by the capillary force. The solder fills the length, width and thickness of the gap and joins the metal members together with a metallurgical bond. The entire joint including areas between the welding locations becomes joined.

Abstract: The processing time and energy efficiency of metal or composite bonding operations is improved by heating the lay-up preform of the structure in an induction heating press where energy goes primarily to heating the workpieces rather than to heating the tooling or being lost to the environment. The bonding process is especially beneficial for joining thermoplastic composites, but it also can be used with metals or thermosets. Preferential heating at the bondline is achieved by using shims to define the bondline and to define bead regions that have relief from contact with the susceptor envelope because of the thickness of the shims in the bondline regions.

Abstract: According to the invention, the rear end of a preceding metal piece and a front end of a succeeding metal piece are heated, pressed and joined prior to the finishing hot rolling. An alternating magnetic field running through the metal pieces in the thickness direction thereof is generated in an end region on opposed faces of the respective metal pieces to perform heating. Another alternating magnetic field whose direction is reverse with respect to that of the former alternating magnetic field is partially generated in the end region on the opposed faces of the metal pieces and in either a region where the metal pieces exist or a region outside width ends of the metal pieces. This assures a uniform heating of the end region on the opposed faces of the metal pieces over their full width to reliably join the both metal pieces to each other.

Abstract: A system and method for laser welding. The joint edges of two adjacent sheet metal components are brought into butting relationship on a weld line. A welding head is moved along the weld line while directing a laser welding beam downwardly from its optics to the weld line where it creates a weld joint. In its path downwardly to a focal point at the weld line the beam passes through a stream of air directed transversely of the beam, a shield plate below the stream of air and above the weld line, and a nitrogen filled zone below the shield and above the weld joint.
