Abstract: In a method of reinforcing a pipe, a water penetration resistant layer and strengthening layer of fibrous material are impregnated with a curable polymer, positioned in a lining position near the pipe, and cured to form a water penetration resistant liner and a strengthening liner. The two layers can be impregnated and positioned separately or at once, for example, as a composite liner. Together, the liners provide a waterproof barrier and structural reinforcement to the resulting pipe. In a method of waterproofing a reinforced pipe, a water penetration resistant layer is impregnated with curable polymer, positioned over a previously installed reinforcing liner, and cured to form a waterproof barrier inhibiting ground water egress into the pipe. In certain embodiments of the methods, the water penetration resistant layer includes fibers woven in one of a satin weave and a twill weave.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a preformed liner of tetrafluoroethylene/perfluoro(alkyl vinyl ether) copolymer adhered to the surface of a pipe, and in particular, an oil well pipe, without the need for either a primer layer or an adhesive. The liner comprises an effective amount of metal powder which provides adhesion between the liner and the surface of the pipe. The present invention also relates to a process for making such pipe, where in a preferred embodiment, the liner is co-extruded to form an inner layer and an outer layer. This co-extrusion embodiment is particularly useful in applications where high purity is necessary. In this case, the inner layer comprises an effective amount of metal powder and the outer layer is pure tetrafluoroethylene/perfluoro (alkyl vinyl ether) copolymer.

Abstract: A method and apparatus utilizing distributed temperature sensing (DTS) to monitor the temperature of a cured-in-place pipe liner to determine if proper curing temperatures and times are achieved. More particularly, an optical fiber is placed in the pipe between the original pipe and the liner running the entire length of the liner. The optical fiber is coupled to a DTS unit at one end. During curing, the DTS unit sends light pulses down the fiber and detects the characteristics and time delay of light backscattered to the unit. The characteristics of the backscattered light is indicative of the temperature of the fiber while the round trip time delay is indicative of the distance down the fiber from the DTS unit from which that particular backscatter signal originated.

Abstract: A process for making plastic-lined metallic pipes for conveying liquid or gas includes the steps of heating a metallic pipe evenly to a first temperature; cooling a plastic pipe evenly to a second temperature; inserting the plastic pipe into the metallic pipe to constitute an inner sleeve; drawing the metallic pipe from its two ends; and cooling the sleeved pipe to a storage temperature. The pipe includes a continuous inner plastic sleeve and an outer seamless metallic pipe. The outer diameter of the plastic sleeve is circumferentially melt-bonded to the inner diameter of the outer pipe. The plastic sleeve constitutes an uninterrupted lining for the metallic pipe.
