Abstract:
A receiver and a method for receiving a digital signal and an analogue signal is described, whereby both signals transmit the same audio program. In dependence of the reception situation, the receiver switches or slides from said digital signal to said analogue signal and back. Each time the receiver switches between the digital signal, which has an audio bandwidth of about 12kHz, and the analogue signal, which has an audio bandwidth of only 4.5kHz, the sound of the received audio output signal abruptly changes from a rich sound to a rather flat sound, or vice versa. To avoid this, the audio bandwidth of the digital signal is gradually reduced when the reception situation worsens. In case of frequent occurrence of switching, or in case of a bad reception of the digital signal, the bandwdth of the digital signal is reduced.

An AM simulcast broadcast signal combining a digital transmission signal and an analogue transmission signal in one transmission channel. The digital transmission signal is modulated to one sideband of a carrier of the transmission channel and a correcting signal (C) is modulated to the other sideband of the carrier of the transmission channel, which correcting signal (C) is determined so that the envelope demodulation of the transmission channel represents the analogue transmission signal.
Abstract:
A system for peak-to-average-power ratio (PAPR) reduction of a frequency shifted plurality of digital broadcast signals taking into account the combined signal peaks in order to transmit the signals more efficiently in a single broadcast transmission system. The PAPR algorithm takes into account a rotating constellation phase offset for the shifted signals corresponding to the amount of applied frequency shift. In the case of a dual sideband In-Band-On-Channel (IBOC) signal typically used in conjunction with an FM carrier in the center, the sidebands can be interleaved to create a new IBOC signal definition and take the place of the FM carrier for an all-digital transmission that is backward compatible with IBOC receivers allowing for a gradual migration to all digital broadcasting.

A method for detecting the digital quality of a radio signal includes: receiving a radio signal including a digital portion modulated by a series of symbols each including a plurality of samples; computing correlation points between endpoint samples in cyclic prefix regions of adjacent symbols; and using the correlation points to produce a digital signal quality metric. Receivers that implement the method are also provided.
