Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To satisfy a need of methods that allow pulse shapes and durations to be manipulated for different phacoemulsification applications and surgery. SOLUTION: The method of generating energy for use with an ophthalmic surgical device includes: a process of generating pulses having an on-time, a first off-time greater than the on-time, and a first amplitude; a process of shortening the first off-time of the pulses; and a process of increasing the amplitude of the pulses from the first amplitude to a second amplitude when the first off-time is shortened to a pre-determined second off-time. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved treatment method for treating glaucomatous retinopathy and optic neuropathy. SOLUTION: In a method, in which an agent stimulating nuclear translocation of Nrf2 protein and the subsequent increases in gene products detoxifying and eliminating cytotoxic metabolites, treats glaucomatous retinopathy or optic neuropathy, the structurally diverse agents acting on the Nrf2/ARE pathway induce the expression of enzymes and proteins, possessing chemically versatile cytoprotective properties and being a defense against toxic metabolites and xenobiotics. As the agents, a Michael addition acceptor, diphenol, thiocarbamate, quinone, 1,2-dithiol-3-thione, butylated hydroxyanisole, flavonoid, an isothiocyanate, 3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxytoluene, ethoxyquin, a coumarin, combinations thereof, a pharmacologically active derivative or analog thereof, and the like, are listed. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide topical formulations of olopatadine for treatment of allergic or inflammatory disorders of the eye and nose. SOLUTION: The aqueous formulations inclde approximately 0.17-0.62% (w/v) of olopatadine and an amount of polyvinylpyrrolidone or polystyrene sulfonic acid sufficient to enhance the physical stability of the formulations. There are disclosed the solution compositions which are administrable for treatment of allergic or inflammatory disorders of the eye and nose, wherein the compositions comprise approximately 0.17-0.62% (w/v) of olopatadine and a reinforcing component for physical stability of polymers substantially consisting of a sufficient amount of polyvinylpyrrolidone or polystyrene sulfonic acid for reinforcing the physical stability of the polymers. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flexible surgical probe in which a fiber can make better access to the internal posterior structure of an eye and simultaneously increase instrument rigidity necessary for treating an eye to reduce force for inserting the instrument. SOLUTION: The probe has a flexible and small diameter fiber sheathed in a small diameter flexible tube comprising the distal tip of the probe. The small diameters of the fiber and tube allow the fiber to be bent in a tighter radius along essentially the entire length of the exposed portion of the fiber, with low tube bending force during insertion, providing a compact design which eliminates the need for a straight distal portion. The small diameter tube also allows a greater wall thickness outer cannula to be used, thereby increasing instrument rigidity. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multifocal ophthalmic lens having refractive and diffractive optical focusing powers. SOLUTION: This invention generally provides, for instance, multifocal ophthalmic lenses such as multifocal intraocular lenses which employ a central refractive region for providing a refractive focusing power and a diffractive region for providing two diffractive focusing powers. In many cases, the refractive focusing power provided by the central region of the lens corresponds to a far-focusing power which is substantially equal to one of the diffractive focusing powers while the other diffractive power corresponds to a near-focusing power. Accordingly, in many cases, the focusing properties of the lenses are determined by the far-focusing power, especially for small pupil sizes. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reliable ultrasonic hand piece which vibrates in both of a vertical maneuver and a twisting maneuver simultaneously or separately without using a piezoelectric crystal, regarding an ultrasonic apparatus, in details, the hand piece for an ophthalmic lens ultrasound emulsification aspiration by a torsional ultrasound. SOLUTION: The ultrasonic handpiece is equipped with a magnetostriction core 100 which can perform both of a torsional maneuver, i.e., the twisting maneuver and the vertical maneuver. The ultrasonic handpiece is also equipped with a magnetostriction stack 110, a horn 120 for ultrasonic wave which is attached to the stack, and an electric coil 150 which surrounds the stack. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and equipment for guiding a light beam along a plurality of optical paths. SOLUTION: In one embodiment of the equipment, the equipment includes a base assembly 20, a first reflection face set in a first angle with respect to the optical axis of incident light beam 11 and operable for guiding light beam along a first optical path and a second reflection face set in a second angle different from the first angle with respect to the optical axis of the incident light beam and operable for guiding light beam along a second optical path, the first and second reflection faces are operable for linearly moving along a common axis and the base assembly 20 is operable for linearly resetting the first and second reflection faces along the common axis so that the incident light beam is made incident on both. The equipment may further include a movement means operably coupled to the base assembly 20 for giving motive force to reset the first and second reflection faces. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multifunction surgical probe operable so as to provide independent control to a surgeon in an ophthalmic laser operation system. SOLUTION: The multifunction surgical probe includes a handpiece to receive a light beam from a laser unit and a firing switch to provide a firing control signal to cause the laser to emit and guide the light beam. The surgical probe may further include an interface coupled to the firing switch to transmit the firing control signal to the laser. The laser unit can be coupled to a surgical console and the interface can be communicatively coupled to the firing switch and to communicatively couple the surgical probe to the surgical console and to transmit the firing control signal to the surgical console. The surgical console can control the laser based on the firing control signal. The surgical probe can also include an interlock switch to prevent the firing switch from firing the laser unit and a standby switch to produce a standby control signal to switch the laser between a stand-by and a ready state. The firing switch may be a progressively actuated switch. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
