[Also in Division C1 Granular ilmerite, iron-containing rutile and materials formed from these by weathering are heated with a magnesium compound to coat the granules (see Division C1) and prevent agglomeration of the granules during subsequent reduction at 1130-1320‹C. in a rotory kiln using 1 part by weight of carbon per 1-2 parts of granules. Sodium chloride or sodium sulphate can be added during the reduction to facilitate the separation of the metallic iron and anosovite phases formed by the reduction.

Abstract: This invention is in the field of water treatment and relates to the problem of removing suspended impurities and coloured substances from water. The solution to the problem involves contacting the water with a particulate mineral, especially clay, having a thin hydroxylated surface layer, the particles having a positive zeta potential. A polyelectrolyte preferably having a polymeric cation, is thereafter added to the water to assist in coagulation. The invention is useful in treating waterways, e.g. rivers.

Abstract: A technique is described which enables agglomerating coals (caking coals) to be flash pyrolyzed in a fluidized-bed reactor without agglomerates forming in the fluidized-bed. The technique requires the inert particles of the fluidized-bed to be coarser and denser than the particulate coal being pyrolyzed. With this arrangement the momentum of the inert particles in the fluidized-bed is believed to destroy the agglomerates as they form.
